Subject: Leaky Head Gasket and NYS Inspection IP: Logged
Message: Can I antcipate any problems with a NYS Emissions Inspection and having a external leak on my engines head gasket?
If so, any low cost/quick fix other than replacing the gasket?
And if I do fail inspection because of the leaky gasket, do I get a temp sticker for something like 10 days to repair the problem?
Thanks in advance

Message: How bad is it leaking? If it is bad enough to cause the truck to overheat that could be a problem. If it is leaking bad , but not overheating, it is up to the tech wheather or not it is safe to continue. What part of NY ya from? Here on Long Island cars and light trucks weighing less than 8500 lbs must run a dyno test unless the vehicle is less than 2 years old, older than 25 years, or has all wheel drive or some kind of traction control that can't be turned off. If its bad I would let the shop know before hand so they don't charge you for an inspection they can' finish.

Message: First, let me come clean and say this is a 2.4L 4cyl 1998 Voyager engine...a generic question re: leaky head gaskets and I didn't think I'd get any response from a 'VAN' NG such as Edmunds, hence my post here (do own a 2001 DAK QC....love it!)
The van doesn't seem to overheat, just uses oil quicker, did foul the plugs, which have been swapped (thought we were gonna turn the van in at end of lease, now that I'm unemployed (thank you WCOM!) and got a great buy out price, we are keeping the van.
I have a 8am appt tomorrow for the inspection (NYS emissions), still suggest I tell the gas station owner (northern Westchester County) about the problem before hand?
Thanks again!

Message: It shouldn't matter either way. You should be considered out of the NYMA (New york Metropolitan Area). You can tell for sure by looking at the registration. In which case you only have to run a low enchanced emmissions test. This should only consist of a gas cap test, and idle test. The only problem that might occur is if the car fails its first idle test and must be pre-conditioned at 2000+ rpm for 2 or 3 minutes. Then it might be a good idea to tell them about the head gasket so they can take it easy on it.
Good Luck tomorrow.

Message: A update:
I think Westchester County has enhanced their Emissions test, they put the van on what looked like a dyno to me, stuck a sniffer up the tailpipe, and run the thing at 55mph for a couple of minutes, then cycled through slowing down and reving back up to 55.
Regardless, it passed, no questions asked about anything, they were pretty non-commital about it.
Perhaps I don't have a serious head gasket leak as told to me by my Dodge Dealer who quoted something like a $500 repair bill to fix it (gee, who woulda thought?)
Thanks for the feedback, we're good to go!

Message: I thought the only did the dyno and exhaust gas test in new york city? Around here (Buffalo,NY) the emissions test consists of verifying that it has an egr valve and cat installed (even if they don't work). Leaks don't matter unless it's a power steering fluid leak.

Message: Yep, I thing Westchester has gotten more aggressive with their emissions testing.
Two minutes up the street is Putnam county where I lived 3 years ago, and I believe then, they only did a safety inspection and/or possibly what you mentioned up near Buffalo with checking the EGR/cat...it was nice and easy when inspecting my lates 70s muscle cars with no hint of smog stuff or cats. (then again, I always went to a motorheads garage who had the same setups on his cars)
