Subject: 2001 5.9 PCM torque managment?
IP: Logged

Message:
I've read that the 2001 and later 5.9 engine PCM has a torque management feature. I took my 2001 quad cab part-time 4x4 5.9 to the dragstrip last night for the first time. Under full throttle, it wouldn't shift from 1st to 2nd gear. It just wound out to about 5500 rpm then the rev limiter kicked in. I had to back way out of the throttle to get it to shift. Is this normal? Will an earlier factory PCM or aftermarket PCM/flash correct this? Thanks for your thoughts!

Actually I had that problem after I got my aftermarket PCM. B&G Chrysler does a flash that gets rid of the Torque Management for you.

But yeah I still have to back off the throttle and it sux in a race. My best advice is to spend $100 on a Transgo shift kit, that'll fix the tranny problem we're having.

The Dealer fixed my shifting problems, if it's under any kind of warrentee they should be able to fix it for you. Unless you have a bad dealer.

It's something to do with the tranny valve body. They had to re-adjust some things and maybe even replace some springs.

I installed a B&M TransPak shift kit in my '72 Duster with a 904 torqueflite. It wasn't that hard, just time consuming. I imagine I can do the same with the TransGo shift kit on the Dakota. I thought the shift points would be lower, especially if the goal of "torque management" is to extend the transmission life. Thanks for the replies!

Had the same problem with my 01 (and so has a lot of other 01 owners). It is the valve body, they have the old style one in your truck, and the new one corrects the problem. A custom flash or shift kit will only hide the problem, if you want it to downshift quicker and perform better get the new valve body. It is covered under warranty.

What recall is this?? I've had the 1-2 hitting the rev limiter problem, as well as others in the transmission, and the dealer will not fix it. Anybody got any ideas?

Most dealers are aware of this bad valve bodies cause they have replaced a ton of them. See if you can take the dealer on a ride with you and show him what is happening. A lot of guys complain about this same problem, the dealer playing dumb when they know damn well what the problem is.

Good news! My only problem was a misadjusted kickdown cable (I didn't think to check that, thought they weren't used anymore). The dealer fixed it under warranty. Now, in Drive, it shifts firmly from 1st to 2nd at just over 4000 rpm.

There was a string about this on Moparchat a few weeks ago. Anyway as I understand it the effect is to make life easier on the transmission. The impact was most noticable on the Rams. Good luck on removing the TM.
