Hey everyone I was wondering if you could help me. I have a 99 R/T with a Vortech SC and am looking at increasing the boost. I have the regular pulley on it now (I think it is a 6 or 7). When I called Vortech they told me that it was the only pulley they made for the Dakota/Durango. He said I could probably have one custom made. Does anyone know if someone makes a pulley for higher boost that will fit on the Vortech? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sorry to answer your question with a question, but I was wondering what mods you have made to handle the higher boost?? Thanks for any info.

I was looking on thier web site and found that it is the only 7 rib belt but was woundering if it was possible to change to a 8 rib set-up? Thier site doesn't say if the pullies are made for different units or universal. They have two of the 8 rib pulley that would kick up the boost. KRC Performance list different pulleys and they would know if the pulleys would be inter-changable(www.krcperformance.com). I have seen alot of mustang kits with the same superchargers and they must have blower pulleys for thier kits you can use. You might want to look on www.superchargersonline.com for what your looking for, plus they have a lot of info. in FAQ.

j- to answer your question I put on the Fel Pro 1008 head gaskets, and I put in ARP head studs. I also changed the manifold gaskets while I had the engine apart.

I didn't really want to convert my whole pulley system to an 8 rib, I think it will be cheaper to have a 7 rib custom made. I was just wondering if another company made a pulley to fit on the vortech. I can't believe vortech doesn't make another pulley for us. Not only that but the guy I talked to (at Vortech) didn't seem to know very much. When I asked him about the pulley he said "it is probably like a 7 or 8". My boost gauge hasnt passed 5 yet. It seems right because a local shop told me that it is a 5# pulley. I have an appointment with them to reprogram my computer and they have a place that makes pulleys for them. So after a dyno run they are going to order me a pulley and then reprogram the pcm with the new pulley on it. I think that should help out a lot.

Thanks for the help

The stock pully is a 7 rib 3.125 dia. pully. If you want more boost you can go with the 8 rib 2.75 dia pully with no problems at all. The belt will align perfectly and not use the "extra" outer most groove. This pully should give you about 4 psi or so more boost if you don't encounter belt slipping which is a whole new subject. The Vortech part number for the pully is 2A038-275. Hope this helps.

Hey thanks BigBird R/T. Have you seen someone use the 8 rib? I just didn't want to have any complications. Do you know if the boost on the stock 7 rib is 5 psi? I was thinking that with my mods that I could go up to 10psi and still be safe. I think my best bet is the custom pulley, what do you think?

Thanks

What type of mods did you do? I know that if you make your engine breath better (ie.cam ,head work, even exhaust) it while cause the boost to drop. The reason is that the boost # is an indication of the amount of air the blown is putting out that your motor can't use on that revolution. So if your motor can eat more because of better volumetric effiency boost# will fall, but hp/tq# will still rise!

I have a 52mm TB, mopar cam, gibson headers, flowmaster 40 series muffler, 3923 autolites, taylor ignition wires, 180 t-stat, and pcm flash. So are you saying that the pulley I have may be a 6 or 7 but I am only seeing 5 because of my mods. Do you think I could still go with a higher boost and be safe?

I wouldn't even think about turning up the boost until you upgrade your head gaskets and use arp head bolts or studs. I have a Vortech T-Trim with 11 psi from Marty at KRC. If you crank up the boost odds are your going to blow the head gaskets.

I do think the boost reading is a result of your mods. You should be able to restore the to 7 lbs. with out any problems. The same thing happens when you put a larger cam in a NA engine. It lets you bump up your compression because of the duration of the cam cuts down on low rpm cylinder pressure.

A good indication might be to look at what kind of timing your engine needs now, to tell you how much more you can go. If you don't have to retard your engine that much with 5 lbs. it gives you some cushioning for the extra boost. The other method of tell would be if you could get away with runnig slightly lower octane gas with out detonating too bad or not at all. I think if you raise the boost you would need new head gaskets. You could get slightly thick ones to drop the static compression for a little safer running.

The only other ways to run higher boost if the above result don't say you can is run octane booster or get an intercooler and run alot more easily.

I already upgraded the head gaskets with Fel Pro 1008 and also used the ARP head studs. I was thinking with that already done that I should be able to run closer to 10psi without any problems.

Good luck. I blew the 10008's out already with 9 psi. I now run the Mr. Gasket solicore head gaskets. If your going to be running 10 psi all the time i'd have the heads O-ringed. I have seen 12 to 13 psi on the Gaskets i'm using now with no problems, But I don't trust them with the poor head bolt pattern we have on the heads. When I pull the engine out and stroke it to a 390, I"m having Marty work me up a set of the R/T heads that are o-ringed. If you don't want to go threw the trouble every other time with changing them, thats you best solution with the supercharger.

BigBird R/T is the legendary Ron Merx who is currently driving his supercharged R/T to high 11-sec 1/4 mile times. I'd listen to whatever he has to say. As for that 8-rib pulley, I'd bet he's seen it. I think it's the one on his truck.

Look at this months' Mopar Muscle Magazine.
