Subject: HO CAM INSTALL TIME IP: Logged
Message: What is the word on how much time to install the HO cams in a 4.7? It seems like it would be very simple; take the valve covers off, there they sit. Loosen the sprocket bolts, take the caps off, put the new ones in, and reinstall the valve covers.
Also, do you need a new valve cover gasket, or can you re-use the original?

Message: Figure a good 6 hours. It may seem simple, but by the time you unhook everything that is in your way, get the covers out, torque everything to spec, etc. If you have air conditioning, you have to unbolt the compressor and move it out of the way. The power steering pump needs two of the 3 bolts removed and the 3rd loosened so you can rotate it out of the way. It is a simple job, just takes time so you don't screw it up.

Message: It took me and a buddy about 2 hours from start to finish. I never had to unbolt the AC compressor. As for the power steering pump, there's a way around that, too.

Message: Maynard,
Maybe you can shed some light on how to remove those head covers without having to move the a/c compressor and how to get a torque wrench on that left cam bolt without moving the ps pump? If you say all you have to do is remove the resevoir, I would advise against that. Too easy to lose or damage the o-ring that seals it and then you have a leak. Some people have learned that the hard way. Better to take the time to remove 2 bolts, loosen a third and rotate the whole pump out of the way. Doesn't take that long.
I did the whole job solo (covert operation from wife :-) ) so that is why it took so long. A second set of hands would have come in super handy throughout the project.

Message: To remove the covers, I bent the AC lines a bit and fooled with them about 5 minutes. Out they popped.
As for the torque wrench on the left, I didn't install the front cap on the cam and left the others slightly loose. I could then slide the camshaft to the rear of the engine, torqued the bolt, and then slide the cam ahead. I then put the cap on and torqued the cap bolts.

Message: I would still pull the A/C and power steering takes only 20 mins extra off and on.

Message: does anyone have a link to the install docs for the cams (and possibly intake)? i saw the ones at speedtweaks but it seems to start at the valve covers. i am getting closer to making the decision to install these myself but would like to gather as much help as i can prior.
