Subject: 03 tranny simply a program flash!! IP: Logged
Message: I just talked with the service rep at DC and I mentioned how disapointed I was with the 45rfe tranny I have in my 02 quad auto. That second stage option for each gear just neve holds much when you need it, so it then drops a 3-4 hundred rpm to it's lowest stage and the rpm's are too low to harness the needed power. Mind you that this mostly the case when towing, and always in 3rd gear up steep canyon hills. The service rep told me it was designed not to hold, what a crock!
So I mentioned that I thought I heard the new 03 tranny's will be different. He said that they are making it a true 5 speed through a new program flash in the main computer module, and the tranny stays the same! The only differance is this new program flash! It sounds to me that getting this flash done to reprogram my tranny could be well worth it, it atleast sounds like it is compatible. Just thought this was quite interesting to note!!

Message: Thanks for the info Drew. I had my 45rfe tranny flash a couple of months ago. I'm not sure if it was this new 5 speed conversion dealy, but it sure made it pull harder....for a while. Now it's back to its ol' slipping ways. An odd 'double-thump' when shifting from 1st to 2nd. Also some minor slipping or a failure to downshift until you're stopped and then re-accelerating again...(wham!).
The poor beast is at the dealer.....again.

Message: I have the 4.7/45rfe combo in my 99 jeep. In the 01 model year they changed the 45rfe to an "almost 5-speed", 4 forward gears with an "extra" gear used only for downshifting. This was done with a software update. The dealer flashed my tranny to the new software under warranty. I just complained that the tranny shifted harshly at times and they flashed it. They probably won’t do it for free (under warranty) unless you can come up with a drivability issue.
I have also read that in the 03 model year the 45rfe will become a true 5-speed (with 5 forward gears) through a software upgrade. Since I’m now out of warranty I may have to pay to have this flash done.
An interesting note about the 45rfe is mechanically it is capable of being a 6-speed (6 forward gears) given the proper programming with a flash. Too bad there isn’t a custom flash available now. I wouldn’t mind a 6-speed tranny.

Message: This is the best news I have heard yet concerning the dakota. My quad is a bit heavy and I have noticed that when towing the tranny sucks, it won't utilize the power. This true 5 speed will hopefully maximize the shift points enough to get the rpms up and horses running. I would like to test drive the new 03 first to see how and when it shifts in different conditions. This sounds like it could be an awesome upgrade for our trucks!
