Subject: Error code 12 - pcm prob? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 Dakota and the Check Engine light is on. When I check it by turning the ignition on, off, on, off, on, I get error code 12 - battery power to pcm disconnected. I checked the wires and everything looked good. I thought maybe that it could be due to the 160 t-stat I put in, but it still does it with a 180. I reset the pcm, but the light comes back on after around 250 miles. Has anyone seen this before?

Message: Check your codes again-- you should get a 12, then 55... but I would imagine you are getting more (your 160 T stat will cause the mil)... Forgot the code-- but it is 'engine too cold for too long."

Message: How long should it take before 55 shows up? I've waited a few minutes and 12 is still up there. Thanks for the info. I figured it was too cold, but I just wanted to be sure. Do you think the 195 t-stat would fix it? I will be putting it back in a few months.

Message: I've had the same "problem" with mine for a few years. Don't know what it is or what causes it. Don't seem to bother it though!

Did it ever correct itself (did the Check Engine light go off)?

Message: I get the same code on my 97 318. It just stays on "12" and never shows "55" or returns to the usual odometer reading. By the way, the on-off technique required me to put the odometer in trip mode(done by depressing reset button once)for anyone else attempting this.

I have a 180 degree t-stat installed and everything works fine. From what I hear, the 195 degree t-stat is used for emissions reasons.
