Subject: you guru's out there.. does this work? IP: Logged
Message: my friend told me that if you hold the engine at about 2000 rpm's and spray a fine mist of water over the throttle body, that it will turn to steam in the engine and clean the valves, and pistons.
he blew a head gasket on the #4 cylender and that piston was spotless because of the steam.
i think i have heard this before, but is it true?

Message: yea it can be done, but you also take the risk of bending things, water dosent like to compress so something else has to give, a mist should be fine though. I've also heard that if you dump a qrt of ATF in a full tank that it'll do the same. It'll some like b!tch, but it'll do the same.

Message: LOL I haven't heard the ATF trick in years!
I don't think the cat would live if you did that, but it works great on non cat engines.
The steam thing is not really worth your time. You won't gain anything doing that.

Message: Yes it works fine. Helps on really carboned up engines. But if you loosen too much carbon (like if you use the GM top engine cleaner) you chance some hitting a valve.
If you are going to do it, do it right before you change plugs. That way you don't change a. fouling your new plugs, b. cracking the plug porcelain.
Most engines run lean enough today it isn't really nec. unless it is a little old lady never warms up type eng.

Message: Just remember: "fine mist". Chucking a 32oz cup of water in there won't work as well :)

Message: I remember Bernd advising that you trickle a small cup of water SLOWLY into the throttle body to steam clean the combustion chamber, but I never had the nerve to try it.

Message: If you guys are looking for something to really clean carbon from your engines, look for a repair shop with a motor-vac system. It runs a detergent through your fuel system and cleans the carbon off the valves, and the tops of the pistons. I have one where I work and use it all the time. It really works.

Message: water injection was used by some experimenters durring the "70's gas crunch with some success, usually they got 2-3 mpg better on a carborated engine in a very small car and in no-matter what the size vehicles they could get away with pinging as it actually slowed down the rate that the flame traveled when the gas was ignighted in the engine. Pinging is caused by the flame traveling too fast so anything that"within reason" that slows it down will slow or eliminate it. As far as trans oil into the gas tank = fouled plugs, clogged cats, ruined fuel injectors as some plastics used in them reacted in a bad way and in some areas a thump on the head for stinkin everything up.

Message: Actually there is a water injected mustang that has been featured in some magazines that is pretty quick. As far as cleaning th engine, yes it does work, i've heard you can take a cup of water and stick a vacuum hose in it (a small 3/32") and it will suck in the right amount of water. The intake cleaners that are out now are probably more efficent though and since they are flammable they won't bend rods if you use to much.
