Subject: Off-Idle Stumble
IP: Logged

Message:
My friends and i know what problem this is with a carburated car but not with fuel injection. If it was a carb to fix this problem all you would do is change the pump cam.
You see I have a 99 R/T with M1, Mopar computer, Electric fan, MSD and other basic crap.
The problem is when I floor the truck from a dead stop the truck bogs down, almost dies, drops almost 50-100 rpm for a quick second and then takes off.
Do any of you know what could be the cause of this stumble off the line???
Thanks

Can your truck have the TPS modification done to it? That might solve the problem...

Chalk mine up too. It flat falls on it's face on launch, but when it gets over 3000 rpm it pulls hard.
I'm running the stock keg, larger TB, MP PCM, 24# inj, msd ign, headers w/3" exhaust, and allot of little crap.

I have the OBD-2 cable that plugs into the laptop and I have several recorded runs, including 1/4 drags, and cannot find anything positive.

I'm thinking of checking the TPS although the laptop says it's at 7% at idle.

My '01 R/T did the same thing from day 1. Since then I have added a 52mm TB, 2bbl M1, MP headers, cat back, MSD ignition, K&N Gen 2, and a BG flash for the PCM. It had the bog until the PCM flash. Before that it would bog and backfire every now and then because it was lean right off idle. I guess the fuel curves in the BG flash cured it so I am happy now.

It might very well be a PCM problem now. Running lean due to mods...it almost sounds like an ignition problem, like fouled plugs or failing plug wires, but it's too new for that (I think).

Have you checked you're intake gaskets? Is the IAC valve hissing real loud at idle? I just fixed one of my friends '98 Ram that has an M1 and had a bad stumble off idle ,he put the gaskets on dry and it was leaking on all the intake ports causing it to run lean , I put Hylomar around all the ports and it has killer throttle response now. I did my '99 318 dakota the same way and have not any stumbling out of it at all , it will fry the crap out of the tires if you got to WOT anywhere under 30 mph or so.

What and where is the IAC valve? Is that different than the hiss it makes when its cold? I have a MSD Digital 6, do you think it could be that? The plugs are new this year and the wire are from last year.

The IAC valve is on the back of the throttle body , it controls the idle speeed by opening up and letting air through, on the Ram when the intake was leaking the computer was seeing lower manifold vac which caused it to richen the mixture , lowered the RPM and the IAC was wide open to bring the idle up to where it should be . It would idle OK but would go dead lean and bog when you hit the gas. The IAC mill make a loud hiss at idle hot or cold if thats the case because it's trying to correct the idle. Another thing it did was the idle would surge about 250rpm +/- when the vac leak got real bad.

Thanks guys for the theorys I will check out the vacuum leak ideas.

I don't think it's the PCM, I have a laptop hooked to the OBD-2 system and it seems to work well. And it will pickup a missfire. (I've seen that in action)

The MSD was a thought but, I wouldn't think so.
bassboy170 do you have a MSD setup?

I think i fixed the problem in mine it was with the air intake.
I was building an air intake from parts i got from galles filters. I thought if i cant fix the stumble problem (the tps setting didnt help) i will atleast make it have power where it will make up for it.
To my surprise no more stumble .
The problem appeared to be warm air.
I did make a kit if anyone is interested
BTW it hasnt got fitted properly since i tryed diff filters and choped up my fender (it looks like a 5 inch diameter by 5 inch length k&n would work with out any cutting of the fender)

If interested email me at Imbacknotinblack@hotmail.com
i will only accept a couple of people since it still needs to be finalized. It will be at material and shipping costs only
I found it fixes other vehicles to but i only do those localy since i only own a dakota
Another thing if u have cruise control and ac it will fit

I have 97CC 5.2 4x4 Automatic. Motor is stock and had hesitation but I wasn't to concerned since I don't race it or anything but I recently switched to the Autolite 3923 plugs and I couldn't believe the difference. Can't hardly pull out now without spinning tires and I run 31x10.50x15 BFG AT KO's w 3.92LSD. Wish I had put them in long time ago.Idles smoother @ 7 and even sounds better.
