 Subject: I Got Beat By A GMC Jimmy!

As I was leaving work this morning I fell in behind a buddy who owns a bone stock GMC jimmy. Everyone always floors it down the long straight in front of the plant which is about a mile long. I got out of the parking lot about 3 car lengths behind him and figured that i would just wind him back in and pass him, WRONG! I had the truck floored but never started pulling him, in fact it appeared that he pulled me, he went from 3 car lengths to about 5! What the hell is up with that?! I know I have 3.55 gears with 32" tires but that sucks! I think my tranny is slipping more than I thought! I thought my 4.7 was stronger than that! I even have duals and a K&N so i'm not bone stock. I don't know what to think now.

well I'm sure it's the 32" tires and the 3.55's, and if your tranny's slipping, well you don't have to be the head cashier at Walmart to figure that out

I should have known you would crack on me! The tranny makes this chirp noise at WOT when the tranny shifts from first to second. The dealer said that it would have to worsen before they could diagnose the problem! Thats an altogether different story that I don't have time to get into. By the way, this gem of a vehicle only has 8500 miles on it!

I was only pissin with ya. 8500 huh? must be nice, my 2002 just passed 15500 a couple days ago and it's only 7 1/2 months old. At least you have a while before your warranty expires, just keep it up and wait till she breaks, or you may even want to try a different dealer. Or, you can try jumping down the sales managers throat, tell him/her this is covered under warranty, fix it or I'm calling Chrysler! If there a 5 star dealer the last thing they want you to do is report them. 5 star to them is highly valued. they have to work hard to get it and keep it, a couple complaints and it's gone.

My buddy has (well had) a Jimmy before too and I blew the socks off of him 1 month after I had my truck...I was bone stock. And I mean I killed him .. from a stop or rolling start, I still beat him by 6-8 car lengths when all was said and done.
Something must be wrong on your end.
Mine's a 2000 4.7L 5spd with 3.55 gears.
Now that same buddy has a WRX and the story is a little different! (Well I beat him through first gear and most of second ... but then his turbo really wound up and he started pulling away and never looked back)

the Jimmy QUADMAN, raced probly had a different gear, and of course his tires didn't help. Not to mention you have a 5 spd as opposedto his auto.

Yeah thats pretty much what the 4.7 was like when I test drove it at the dealership...didn't feel like it was hardly moving at all. Got in the R/T and could tell the difference...was like night and day.
Oops...didn't mean to make it another 5.9...4.7 battle haha.

4.2 liter motors? (2002), or a wimpy 4.3? plus
you probably outweigh him by a few hundred
pounds.
that could be your problem. that new motor
lacks in the TQ department, but once its
moving....
get some 3.92's, or 4.10's that would probably
help, especially with those 33's

the Jimmy's nameplate was discontinued a year or two before they redesigned it. they called it the envoy since 2000 or 2001.
MikeD's a punk hahaha just pissin with ya man please not another battle.
QUADMAN, I see you went the 4x4, lift, and big tire route, with a (let's face it) pretty much stock 4.7L especially with 3.55's your truck can't be that fast, and you really can't expect it to be. If you wasn't the best of both worlds that'll be expensive. But for now while it's summer, put the stock, or smaller tires on there and you'll feel a huge difference

ok envoy will beat a qc 4.7 auto(looks like a 4x4 too) they weigh like the same amount and the envoy has 270hp vs 230...not rocket science. jimmys weigh less then daks i think so why would't a 3500 lb truck with 190hp be able to hang with a 4600lb truck with 230?

I have beat most stock vehicles light to light in my area, full or midsize. I have 3.55's with 33's and some mods so either your tranny is shi^^in the bed or he has something extra under the hood!

Well he said a jimmy so that's the old body style about 1999. Which has about 180hp and 240 tq (this is a guess) so it is going to be close but the 4.7L is much stronger. Then it boils down to gear ratio, I had a 99 s-10, but I don't know if there is a choice in gears, like ours. If there is and the jimmy had 4.10's and stock (we'll say 30"s) Then because of the gearing the jimmy would have the advantage. And don't forget about the tranny problem.
I'll tell ya what, I by no means have the fastest Dakota, but I do have the 4.7L 3.92's w/LSD and the stock 29"s or whatever they are. I’ve raced them before (not a real race just as the light turned green the guy tried to get in front of me and, well lets just say he couldn't keep up)

Hey Ll Blackdak. There's a rocket science class in Washington you should attend. A stock 4.7 (235-240hp in 2K) QC 4x4 auto 3.92 dakota will outsprint a stock Envoy 6cylinder at 270 hp. This is in the 0-60 and quarter. Come on up, take the class, then you'll figure it out. Quadman, I definitely think something's goin' on with your dakota. Even with the 32's and 355's you should've smoked the jimmy. Make sure you've got the latest tranny and engine flash as well. I test drove a ton of 5.9's and 4.7's. They felt just about the same. The 5.9 picked up a bit quicker at the start, but immediately after, the 4.7 picked up a bit quicker after 2-3K rpm.

sorry i was thinking about the 01 and 02 a$$hole 230....i drove a 4.7 4x4 and it is no rocket(better then my crap)but still...no it won't!!! it really wont. a 2wd will most likely dust an envoy...but quadman has a QC 4x4 4.7...not the quickest combination!! envoy does 0-60 in 7.9 seconds and since a 2wd qc auto does 0-60 in 7.4 according to motor trend. i doubt a 4x4 will do it in under 8.5 or 9. off the line quadman would pick up faster but that isnt what we are talking about...we are talking about catching a much much lighter jimmy.

Nevermind, I must have been imagining crap cause I smoked him pretty bad this morning. He talked crap all night last night but he got humbled very quickly this morning. The truck felt alot stronger this morning for some reason and i pulled him from the beginning and just kept on pulling away. I was over 10 truck lengths ahead of him before we got through the straight.
