Subject: Under hood temps IP: Logged
Message: I was looking for input on keeping the under hood temps down.I have a '97 5.2 auto ,it has a/c , with a Black Magic 150 electric fan , trans cooler , SS headers ,K&N gen II , and a bunch of other mods. When the under hood themp rise (150 or higher) I lose alot of power.I have been thinking of adding a second fan (pusher) and pulling off the foam strips at the back corners of the hood. What else can I do to get the heat out?

Message: Here's a cheap and easy trick...you know the weather stripping at the back where the hood sits...ya know the rubber stuff...remove it and you'll let heat thats trapped in your engine out. I did it and it seems like my engine doesn't get as hot as it used to. Oh here's a not so cheap trick...jet hot coat your hearders and intake manifold, that'll drop your heat.

Message: you may not want to wrap your headers unless you don't care about replacing them soon afterwards. wrapping them drastically cuts down on the life expectansy of them

Message: slider_buck is right. Header companies don't recomend wrapping them. It voids the warrenty. Bassicly what it does is keeps the headers from getting rid of any heat. They heat up to their max recomended opperating temp. These high temps cause a lot of stress on welds and tubes. It's not worth replacing headers every few years over dealing with a little heat. If you have a free flowing exaust, including cats, you should be able to remove some of the heat too since the faster the gasses exit, then the more heat that is taken with it.

Message: MikeD , are there any downfalls to removing the weatherstriping? If so , what would they be? Also , I have the Homade Intake , could I wrap it with the nomex stuff? If so , how much is that stuff?

Message: I think most of the heat is comming from the radiator and the problem is that at idle the cold air box heats up and when it first takes of it sucks up hot air for the first few seconds. One idea I have is to mount a small 200 cfm fan in the hole in the fender where the factory air box took air from and use that to keep the cold air box cool.

Message: Naw , I don't think he ment to put the fan IN the intake , just have it draw air in from the hole in the fender where the factory was getting its air from.

Message: Ken, i understood that. He's talking about blowing air on the intake, not in. I was joking about that ebay POS; I'd be in fear of fire hooking that thing up!

Message: I wonder if blowing (or pulling) cool air in from that location would help? Or do you think it would mess up the airflow?

Message: i removed the piece of weatherstripping along time ago and have not found any draw backs except for not to use the brushless automatic car washes. it sprays right at the opening and soaks the engine.

Message: put two or three washers on the bolts at the back of the hood to raise it up a tad. then remove the weather stripping at the back. this should give you about 1/2 to 3/4 inch gap at the back of the hood and a small gap on the sides.
I call it the 2 dollar cowl induction hood.
or you could try mounting some of those large metal mudflaps on the front side of your tires just enough to block the tire of wind. this deverts air around the tire creating a ventoury(spelling) effect sucking hotair out from the hole in the wheel well lining and from behind the bumper. roe racing actually sells some aluminum strips for the viper crowd that are supposed to be effective.

Message: Jet hot coating your headers is different from header wrap. Jet hot coating is just as safe as ceramic or nickel coating them.
