Subject: 4.7 Short Belt HELP (no A/C) IP: Logged
Message: I currently have a 4.7 with A/C, and I just bought a shorter belt for a 4.7 without A/C. My problem is does anyone know how, or where I could find a routing diagram for the NO A/C belt?
And for everyone wanting to know why; it is for track use only.

Message: Duner has discovered a way to run a short belt that actually USES the A/C but NOT the alternator or power steering pump. I have tried it and it frees up a LOT LOT LOT of power. The only trick is wrestling with the steering wheel to make the turn onto the return road.
You need a 59" or 60" belt 6-ribbed. It goes around the crank pulley, to the passenger side of the water pump, over the top of the A/C pulley, down to the tensioner pulley, around the idler pulley and then down to the crank pulley.
That's confusing, but I can e-mail you a sketch.

Message: You're not gonna gain anything bypassing the A/C rotor as long as you turn off the compressor. To spin the rotor with the clutch disengaged (A/C off) takes a whopping 0.1 HP. Not worth the trouble. Do as Alex said and kill the real power mongers.

Message: Duner dyno'd that short belt configuration and I think he said it added up to about a 22hp gain. It takes A LOT to run that PS pump and the alternator.
Every 4-5 passes down the track, reinstall your long belt and drive around the pits in 1st gear. That will recharge your battery. Then reinstall the short belt and haul ass.

Message: I tried the same thing on my 01 CB, well once i
paid 45 bucks for the belt, I couldnt figure out
how it was routed, so I started the truck and
quickly checked my ac pulley, it spins freely, I
had my assistant push the A/c button and it
immediately wouldnt spin.
PS if you do this only do it for a few seconds
as the oil pressure drops almost immediatley.
Bring the belt back and keep the money in
your pocket. Or send it to me for solving your
dilemma;)

Message: Oil pressure dropped??! since when did DCX start building engines with external, belt driven oil pumps? NEVER.
You may not have oil pressure but it sounds like your A/C clutch is in perfect working order.
$45 bucks for a belt? Let me know what store to NOT shop at...

Message: Don't you mean the volt-meter dropped immediatley? It's the gauge in the upper left of the cluster.... That's because the alternator was not turning.
PS- I paid $12 for my belt. Kelly Springfield #592K6

Message: ANother thing that I was thinking. with only the ignition system running (lights / radio off, etc.) I bet the slight draw on the alternator (50 amps at most) will be less than a couple of HP. what about a belt that bypasses jsut the power steering and maybe the A/C, anyone got a belt or routing for that?
Remember that you will get more consistant fuel pressure and spark at 14.4v with the alternator than with jsut a battery.

Message: That's all true & stuff, but when you go to route the belt any other way, the tensioner pulley and idler pulley are located in such a way that one section of belt begins to rub against another section of belt.
Trust me, I went to Pep Boys and spent three hours trying different belt lengths and routings.

Message: chris your so called slight load on an alternator of 50 amps or so is the max output of the alternator in many late model small cars with few accessories and adds up to almost 14 horsepower. a bit more then a slight load don't you think?
