I don't think it's a chip. I think you send them your PCM and they reprogram or flash it, then send it back to you. Not for sure, but I think that's how they do it.

Signman is right. It's a flash. It is called the
Optimizer II. I don't know for sure if they can do it for a 2001, but you can call them at 909 941-6646 to find out.
