I'm new to the board here and I admit I don't know a whole lot about this stuff, so please excuse this question. I was wondering how traction bars work, where can they be purchased, and about how much they cost. Thanks for any help.

traction bars keep your leaf springs from bending in an (s) shape whenever you mash it. they mount under your axle where the leaf springs set at and extend foward towards the front. when your leaf springs don't bend when you mash it all the torque is transmitted to the wheels and not wasted by the movement of the springs getting twisted. depending on what kind you get the price can vary from about 30 to 300. i have the competition engineering bars on mine which are 300 but they work extremely well. you can see a pic of them mounted on my truck at www.geocities.com/slider_buck and i got mine from mancini racing

Slider-buck has it, they basicly stop the axle from trying to wrap up in the springs. They maintain the geometry of the springs while transfering that torque to the chassis. What this does is lift the front end slightly so that you get more weight transfer onto the rar wheels giving better grip.

I agree with slider_buck. The Competition Engineering Slid-A-Link system from Summit Racing work excellent. Went to track last week, and had very good traction. Used Good Year 10" Slicks and the truck hooked-up great!!

i would think it would all depend on how it is lowered, blocks or springs. if it is blocks i would think you would ok but don't think so if you are using different springs. not positive though.

on my 94' at stock ride height the front bar mount is at 5.25" from the ground. Subtract the drop from that and it should give you roughly what your clearance is. Ok, everyone else that has them, am i right in thinking that as long as you still have the same overall wheel size (including tire) and no additional springs in the pack then the rear hanger will remain a constant height?just the forward one you have to be wary of.

How do traction bars compare to the 'active suspension' kit on speed tweaks? Compare, in performance, and in ride stiffness (heard that the traction bars give it kinda a ROUGH ride when hitting bumps, etc)

I can't speak for the active suspension kits, but I can't tell a difference in the ride with the competition engineering bars. I would expect it is the same for slapper bars as well except with the largest of bumps. You can also adjust the comp and caltracs bars if they are bottoming out to soon for your driving conditions. I plan on opening mine up when I tow a trailer to Florida.

is the installation of the traction bars pretty
simple...I dont want to have to take off the u-
bolts etc to install them.

If you decide on the competition engineering bars or the caltracs then the U-bolts are the least of your probloms. You have to pull the front leaf eyelet out, then bend the shackle a bit to get the new hanger in. None of it is really that big a deal, especially with people whom you can ask questions of.

I haven't noticed any difference in ride
whatsoever. I have the chrome Lakewood universal
traction bars. I mostly forget that they are even
there, except for this past weekend. I had to back
up a steep driveway onto the road, and I actually
burned rubber, a big fat stinky cloud of it.
