Subject: How do you guys race your autos? IP: Logged
Message: Do you:
a) just put it in drive, hold the brake, then hammer it when the light turns?
b) drive it through the gears? (if so, can you describe how you do this)
c) put it in drive as in (a), but accelerate gradually instead of mashing the pedal to the metal.

Message: Hrm.....this new technique you speak of....accelerating, how'd you put it...gradually? What does this mean? Are you trying to tell me that when you put your truck in gear, you DON'T have to put the pedal to the floor? I'm lost.
:)
I always did it like this... put it in first...hold the brake till almost tire spin, (the back end will raise up), then at launch...I tap the pedal to the floor...let off about half way (do this very quickly, seems to help me hook up).. I shift it to second because it seems to shift to soon if you go ahead and put it in 2nd....then once i get in second...i go to drive (OD button already off..) and hold er to the floor. :) got a 5.9, stock (does a K&N air filter, a roll pan, and fuzzy dice count against stock?) and it seems to work for me.

Message: Method A is the best except you want to also load up the torque converter some by powerbraking. This will get you a little bit better launch.
Don't do B because manually shifting these transmissions only makes the gears overlap (hunt)more. Let the tranny control it and it will shift firmer. One of the best mods you can do if you wanna race is get a shift kit for $100 plus installation. Then you'll really have a firm positive shift. Check out speedtweaks they have the kits and also the valvebodies to make the install a do-it-yourself job.

Message: Ya A is how I do it also... I have tried giving a little bit of gas so it's about to spin and then launching, and also just flooring it when the light turns - both seem to be pretty close but haven't compared them enough to see which is better.
I was going to buy the TransGo shift kit, but wasn't sure if the Jr or the Sr kit would be best. One is like $60 and the other is like $220 (CDN prices). Labour on the big one is a bitch though!
So with a shift kit and a Mopar PCM, should be much nicer shifts right?
How do you guys have your tire pressure when racing? Keep it normal? Do you do burnouts? I have heard a lot of people say with street tires don't do burnouts. But whenever I do a burnout, I get 10x better launches.
James - I thought about shifting it myself through the gears, but I am worried about *ucking up my tranny doing that!!!

Message: well youre right about messin the gears up. see mine is not a factory r/t i swapped engines tranny rearend etc myself couple months back. but when i did have a 6 cyl, i burnt the first trans out about 30000 miles (won a lot of $ off of s-dimes tho. ) so when i rebuilt the tranny..had the transgo kit put in it...bored all holes big as possible, left all check balls out that was allowed, set it for r/v-towing....put a LOW stall converter in it... (not sure why just told the guy the wrong thing, didnt know much about tq converters at the time) but it turned out to be one mean mother. it would leave about 30 ft of rubber in 2nd (not posi tho :()and would chirp 3rd bout 3 outta 5 times....and snap great going into even OD. only bad thing out of it was, that if you were drivin along slow like 20mph...it would *bump* back and forth between gears...like it was sayin "go on!" just a constant up-down-up shift...like you were green hornin a standart shift.... but u could shift down into 2nd and it wouldnt do it...i guess it was he electronics... but i even had the guy set the tranny to shift in D at 4900 rpms at wot....and it did every time.
as far as the burnouts...i dunno. i gave almost 900 bucks for my tires.... kinda reluctant to turn em more than i have to...hehe
i still need to go to the track and see what kinda 1/4 mile times im gettin, seems like i got a good 360 outta that wreck.....wish i had numbers to back it up. waitin on speedtweeks to start sellin the twin t's, cuz i will order a set the DAY they release em.. hehe

Message: Although my current vehicle is an stick my previous ones were autos. Here's what I found:
Mash the brake pedal all the way to the floor with your left foot.
Mash the gas as far as you can push it w/o doing a burnout.
When you're ready to go let up on the brake semi-quickly while putting the gas the rest of the way down (if you're not there already)
This pre-loads the converter and takes the play out of the gears and suspension. It may take a few tries to get it right w/o just making a localized "fog" bank.

Message: When me and my buddy went to the track he practically has the same mods as me and he does (a) and I do (b) and everytime I had a faster time. And when I manually shifted it didn't fish for gears, plus doing it this way you get maximum rpm's out of each gear...say you want it to shift just before your powerband is up..which on mine would be about 5500. So manually shifting lets me get every last bit of power I can, chances are if your holding your foot to the floor (assuming you dont' have the shift kit) then its gonna shift too early and your losing that extra power you could've gained reving a little higher.

Message: so does manually shifting an auto damage the tranny?
i threw my stealth out of OD and sometimes into 2nd and the tranny started to slip from 3rd to 4th...

Message: I think it would if you did it everyday everytime you took off from a stoplight...but if your doing it only at the track or an occasional race on the street it won't be that bad. It probably wouldn't damage it but to be honest it might not last as long as if you just held your foot to the floor all the time. When I get the shift kit I wont' manual shift anymore since I can program it when to shift.

Message: Ya good point.. the TransGo shift kit is a good idea but if you don't install it yourself labour will be a biggie.
Yes when Speedtweaks released the TT I am ordering one FOR SURE!!!
Hell I will even send a deposit right now on one!

Message: Your gonna buy a TT and your worried about labor for the Transgo? HAHA Man do you know how much the TT's are gonna be? at least $3000-$4000...labor for a transgo (if you find a good honest shop) should be no more than $200 if it is your gettin screwed.

Message: I put mine into 2nd. Let the tranny shift out of 1st for you. It's real hard on the tranny to manually shift 1-2 since the reverse badn is engaged while in 1st gear. I can't do (a) or I will spin really badly. I load up the torque converter, but when the lights come down, I let off the brake, and push the gas down slowly. If I mash the gas it spins. I let the tranny shift itself into 2nd(does this about 5100RPM) and shift into 3rd myself at about 5500RPM. I leave my OD on other wise the torque converter locks up and it has a slight bog.

Message: I load the torque converter and rock the throttle down on launch. I leave it in 2nd until it shifts out of 1st (1st is waaayyy to short for me) and put it into 3rd with OD off about 3000 in 2nd.

Message: I have the same problem as HSKR, too much power of a brake torque to go full throttle until about 20mph.I did some testing with a g-tech and found that it was more consistent if I held it at 1200 rpm and pushed the pedal down over about 1/2 sec.
