Subject: Towing questions/help! IP: Logged
Message: I own a 2000 Dak Quad 4.7L, 3.55; wondering if it
could tow a 4-horse trailer with opt. trailer towing pkg from dealer. Anyone out there hauling
horses around? Thanks. JF

Message: hmmmm I think it would be scary. My uncles tounge weight on his 4 horse trailer is pretty heavy. I am not sure the Dak has the rear end strong enough. Another thing it would pull it but have a hard time. The thing that would scare me is stopping. That is a lot of wieght to stop. When we go hunting we have a chev 350 and it kills us to 3rd, 35mph on some hills. My 2 cents is I would not do it.

Message: Don't think it would be wise. for argument sake say you have 2800 hundred lbs. of horses, 2000 + lbs of trailer. and 500 + lbs of tack. the weight of your truck without load is what approximatly 4800 hundred lbs. would be like the tail wagging the dog when it came time to stop in a hurry. check owners manual under towing for gear ratios and combined truck/trailer weight. check sticker on left door jamb for gross weight. for what it's worth.

Message: Depends on the total weight of the load (trailer/horses/equipt), the tongue weight, and if the trailer has brakes. Your dealer should be able to do a Job Rating on your SPECIFIC truck to tell you how much it can safely pull to the pound. This is not them just looking in the book...its an actual form that they fill out to come up with the weight. Currently I pull a boat that weighs 4100# with a Ranger (V6 4.0). It struggles at highway speed but does pull it. I just ordered a 2001 Dak 4.7 and anticipate no towing problems based on the Job Rating that the dealer did for me. My trailer does have brakes which makes a world of difference.
