Subject: Ram air/Cold air on 4.7 IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone found a way to form a ram air on the new 4.7 quads. There is so much crud at the front of the engine I can't find a place to put a tube through. Cone filters I've seen just sit where the air box used to be which seems to me they will suck hot air. Thought about taking off the rubber piece behind the grille and letting the air come through there.

Message: Heath,
I have the 4.7 with a z-tube on my 00 4x4. I took off the front rubber peice and made an enclosure around the air filter with tin. It wraps all the way around the bottom and connects to the side so that no hot air can get in (or mud). After putting this on I noticed a little more power and the hottest the intake tube will get now is about 70 degrees:)

Message: Thanks for the help. Besides getting the hood I was thinking the same thing. Get rid of the rubber piece and sheild everything around the filter to keep the heat out.

Message: Hey Guys,
I found some flexible ducting at Auto Zone that I believe is made primarily for the old air breather snorkel-to-exhaust manifold connection for pre-heated air intake. This stuff works good for a cold-air intake system to your air box. If you look long enough, you can find one of these ducts that is rectangular and makes a 90-degree transition from one end to the other. Turn one end so that it is taller than it is wider and run it to the front of the engine compartment. Cut a hole in that rubber piece ( beside the radiator ) just big enough to let your duct protrude through. With the duct positioned tall and narrow, it will just fit between the plumbing pieces & other hardware beside the radiator. This one duct will not be big enough to supply all the air you need at WOT, so pick up a round piece of this same type duct while you're at Auto Zone and run it similar to the factory air horn, except run it on into the fender and work it around to get it as close to the grill opening as you can. You'll have to make some cuts in the front of your factory air box to make both of these duct pieces fit, but it will work. This will give about as fresh, cool air as you can get without doing a lot of damage or plumbing, and it still leaves that rubber piece beside the radiator intact. Pull out the factory paper filter and replace it with a K & N. I believe you'll notice the difference, and it won't look that bad under the hood, either.
