Subject: ASE Chip For 4.7L(test) IP: Logged
Message: I wanted to post the info. on my own personal ASE chip test.
02 4.7L CC 5spd
Dyno Before chip install-RW 208.8 & 289.1 Torque. Dyno was done at Atlanta Chassis Dyno. Mods. before chip install were HO Cams, Magnaflow Exhaust, Carsound 94016 Hi-Flow Cat, 3923's, Robert Shaw 180 Stat.
Dyno afer ASE chip install
RW 209.3 & 288.1 ft-lbs torque (06/13/02) Atlanta Chassis Dyno.
Needless to say this chip did not produce the results I was looking for. I called ASE before sending my ECU and told them I would be satisfied with a 10hp gain and was told that would be no problem (web site claims 26hp increase). The speed limiter was removed in top gear but fourth gear would hit the limiter @4800rpm and about 115mph after installing the chip.
I am not bashing this company but do think some more R&D is needed before they can claim the kind of gains they are claiming. Again this is my own personal experience with the ASE chip and some others may be different.

Message: It seems that ASE needs to either refund your money or get the hell on the job and give you some power! Thanks for the post and the info. Where are you in ATL? I'm in Decatur and have intentions of going to ACD before long. I'd like to get a dyno graph when I'm done with all the mods.

Thanks for posting this. Your going back to the company right? please keep us informed.

Message: Alex,
I agree with you, $439.00 (chip $349.00 shipping cost $80.00)is alot to pay for no gains.
I am located in Sandy Springs area, Atlanta Chassis Dyno are good guys and are very informative. One thing a forgot to mention about the ASE chip is that it will not work with a supercharger and I will be installing the Paxton soon.

Shoot, for that matter, I could help you bolt it in if you'll let me test drive it....
Hahahhahaa! Keep me posted.

Message: I don't think the mods had anything to do with the lack of performance from the ASE chip.
I was worried about this also (HO Cams) and contacted ASE before shipping my ECU and told them I had the HO Cams and other mods. and was informed that it should only help the performance as far as the ASE chip is concerned. I was very frank with ASE before sending my ECU and wanted at least 10HP from the chip and was guranteed 15hp in a phone conversation with them. I also sent a copy of my previous Dyno run with the ECU to ASE just to let them know I would be doing another Dyno run after receiveing the chip. They have both copies of the before and after dyno runs and I am waiting to hear from them now.
Will update.........

I know that I've made changes that didn't have much effect on the peak numbers but changed the profile of the curves by quite a bit.

Message: R/Truck
I know it is computer simulated and did not expect to see the 26HP RW they claim. I called ASE and was told I would receive at lest 15hp and said I would be happy with 10hp. Yes, I was skeptical to R/Truck that is why I researched it
and explained to ASE that I would be doing the Dyno runs and they assured me of the 15hp RW.
I talked with ASE a number of times before sending in my ECU and was once again assured of the gains.
I did not expect a "Miricle chip" just something for my money.

buying the ASE chip (they are only 30 min from

considering I have the HO cams and manifold
sitting in my room.
All I want is something that produces some
HP and removes the speed limiter, is there an
aplication for the 2001's with the Kenne bell
optimizer ?

Message: Duner,
The curve is actually better on the stock chip graph. Spoke with Marty (KRC Performance)before the chip upgrade and he has the before Dyno sheet. I am in the process of sending him the after Dyno run. (KRC does not have fax machine and I do not have a scanner)
Like I said in a previous post I am not bashing ASE just giving info. on my personal experience with the chip. They seem as confused as me about the lack of performance gains but the fourth gear limiter @ 4700rpm is also a negative with this chip not just the lack of hp & TQ. However Fifth will run well past 115mph, on dyno and on the empty HWY last night.....

mwb - thanks for the fax! What kind of rearend gear ratio are you running in your truck? What size tires? Was it pretty humid when they ran the dyno pulls? I see they used different correction factors and gear ratios on the pulls. Any idea why?

Message: Duner- Currently I have the stock tires, 255/65/16 with a 3.55 gear (lots of highway driving). The humidity level was about the same for both runs (65%) but the Temp. was 15 degrees higher on the second run. I asked about the CF also and the Temperature difference is the reason that was given for the CF change.

Message: Ole- ASE gave me two options.
1. Ship ECU back to them and they would install my stock chip and refund my $349.00.
2. Let them develop the 4.7L chip further for a guaranteed minimum 10HP gain (did not say how much torque). Kalani said development may take about two months.
I decided to go with option two and let them develop the chip a little further since I already have $80.00 in shipping charges and to send my ECU back would cost another $80.00 (both ways).
That would have left me with $160.00 dollars in shipping charges only to be back at square one.
ASE has been very cooperative and said they would keep me updated on the progress of the chip development.
I will update this post when I have new Info.

Message: the more i read about the ASE chip, the more i feel okay about waiting for Speedtweaks flash. either that, or wait and see more results from the KB flash.
mwb: did you get to do any dyno testing before/after the Carsound cat? a couple of exhaust gurus i talked to recommended the Catco cuz they said the Carsound isnt really as high flow as they claim. just wondering. also, do you recall if they are any O2 sensors after the main cat? i looked around real quick when i was installing my Powergate last weekend and didnt notice any. thinking about getting one but some people have mentioned needing to get OBD-II compliant cats which are way more $$.
thanks!

Something you may want to consider, I am going to replace my 2.5" cat(part#94016) with the 3"(part#94019)and go with single 3" exhaust all the way to the tail pipe. Will lose a little on the bottom end but will more than make up for it on the top.

Message: thanks for the reply mwb. it's odd they dont have any sensors after that 3rd cat. and you're not throwing any codes or lights? one of the exhaust guys i talked to said i needed an OBD-II cat and that'll cost me more than what i was expecting. if there is no sensor then a regular high flow like a Catco should work right? i just wanna make sure i'll be able to pass emissions.
i already have a catback using 2 1/2" to the muffler, so i'd just be looking to replace the cat. i feel if i open it up any more i'll lose to much bottom end, and thats the opposite of what i am looking for. the truck already pulls really well thru the upper R's, i just want that tire-roasting torque at the bottom.
thanks for your input!

Message: crm- Did you see a flow comparison between the Carsound and Catco Hi-flow cat's? Did one flow better than the other??
I have always used Carsound (made by Magnaflow) but if the Catco is better or equal to the Carsound than it should be worth a try, plus the Catco is cheaper $62.00 vs's $90.00 for the Carsound, this price is for the 2.5"
Did not see any codes replacing cat. I believe you can remove your third cat completly and still not see any codes...not recommending this.

Message: mwb: havent seen any flow data, just heard it from a guy thats been doing custom exhaust work for 35 years. he sells both the carsound and catco. said that the carsound cats flowed a little better than new stock ones, but that catco is by far the better choice for performance. he's always been really straight-up with me (also came highly recommended) and just tries to help me get the most out of what i can spend. he was the one that suggested and built my current exhaust and i couldnt be more pleased with it. so, i figure he's the one with the experience so i trust his judgement.
another cat question for ya: were there not any air-tube hook-ups on the cat you replaced? i'm still just finding it odd they dont have at least an O2 sensor back there. i'm gonna look closer at mine tomorrow and if it's just the cat and nothing else i may get that done prior to the HO cams/intake.
and, it's definitely cheaper. i was just under the impression it needed to be OBD-II (lot more $$$) to make sure it didnt throw any codes or cause it to fail the stricter emissions.

Message: crm- There are not any 02 sensors after the third cat on the 01 and up 4.7L. There should be four o2 sensors, one before the precats and one after each precat which are high flowing already.
The third cat can be replaced with a Hi-flow version or removed completely with no MIL codes.
