Message: If it's the 4.7 it's not all that hard. It's just the positioning of it sucks. The housing is located at the bottom left of the engine (if your looking head on) you have to remove the plastic shield on the bottom and then go from there.

Message: Ok Pal. if you have the 4.7 motor in a 2wd just remove the housing on the lwr hose which connects to the block with (2) 8 mm bolts. dont worry about draining the coolant first, it is a waste of time, this is for the 4,7 mind ya, remove the two bolts kinda tight area to work, from under the hood, Ouch i scraped my arm, Damn..are the bolts out,? good, but use a 1/4 drive ratchet, socket, and a 6 inch extension or a 3 incher, pull off housing. Out comes coolant, not all..just a little. Then carefully twist housing up and over so you can remove T stat. Look carefully at the seal or gasket it is reusable it has a notch on it that fits into the housing also. REMEMBER THIS! install new T stat in seal and install back into housing line up notches ( install the thick portion of seal into housing, most important.., thats why i said look carefully at everything slowly when removing) and make sure you put the copper pellet & spring end into block..install bolts snug em not to tight now, refill radiator with coolant if you tried to save some, i just add from a fresh bottle.when itis topped off, start engine, let her run and top off again.. then install radiator cap, check for leaks, drive some, let motor cool off remove cap, top off if needed, reinstall cap, temp guage should be lower now.. I hope this helps..? I have this down to a science, I can do this in 20 minutes on a 4.7..

what is that screen name anyway?
On the 4x4 T-stat, just make sure you put it in 4wd before installing the new T-stat!

Message: I saw where the housing is for the thermostat and it looks like a pain to get to. I have to take the Dak in sometime next week after she gets her make-over to get the serpentine belt changed anyways, so i think ill just have the dealer install the t-stat while they're under the hood. Also picked up 6 Autolite 3923's and a PCV filter thing today. Im sure the PCV filter doesnt do too much of anything, but it matches the open element filter i have, so i guess it looks good. Didnt have the time to install the plugs today because of work, so it looks like i wont get to those until the end of next week. Hoping that wont be too difficult of a chore.

Message: I got a generic 160 stat for about $3 at Autozone and popped it in my 4.7 with no problems. And yes, it made a difference! Here's a trick: drill a few small (about 1/8 inch) holes through the thermostat before putting it in. The temp won't fluctuate as much; instead of being completely on or off there will always be some flow and the thermostat will be more responsive.

Message: Drilling the small 1/8" hole lets out the air after install and also helps regulate the water flow better. Al is correct on this one. Locate the hole in same place as the stock T sta has the check ball, at least they do on the 4.7 195 degree.
