Subject: 4.7 airbox silencers?? IP: Logged
Message: I have decided to just get a drop in K&N filter for my mom's 4.7 Durango retaining the factory intake setup. Besides removing the rubber flap and plastic elbow you guys have mentioned, is there any factory silencer/baffle type pieces to be removed to improve performance?? I know on some vehicles they are there just to keep the noise down, help would be great, I want to tinker as much as possible

Message: nope, everything else in the airhat is kinda molded together. the baffle in the airhat starts up near the TB on the driver's side and curves around toward the front passenger side. just open it up and you cant miss it. from what i've read, a drop-in with the air horn and rubber flap removed is prolly the most you can do without replacing the whole thing.

Message: Below the filter line on the airbox, engine side,I drilled (3) 2.5" holes in a row through the airbox. I also removed the elbow and drilled (2) 2.5" holes through the rubber flap, instead of removing it. Now I have a awsome throaty sound when I get on it,and it gets more air. I also use the K&N drop in air filter.

Message: I am using the stock airbox with a K&N Drop-in filter, but have also modified the intake for improved airflow.
I have used a fernco elbow, short PVC pipe, and a fenco
coupler to connect to the airbox. I then extended the air
intake to the grill using 4" aluminum ducting.
A modified black plastic sewer pipe connector
is inside of the airbox to connect the aluminum
ducting, and a sewer pipe 4"round to 3"x4" rectangular
was used to get the air from the grille.
I had to cut some slits in the 3x4 pipe to fit around
the a/c lines.

Message: BB2DAK,
That's not too bad looking! Stick her on the dyno and tell me if it gives you anything (when you get a chance). Send me the specs on the supplies you purchase (size, price, etc), and I'll try it myself.

1 Fernco 3" Elbow $10.00
1 6" piece of 3" PVC (painted black) $ 1.00
1 Fernco 3" Coupler $ 3.50
1 12" piece of 4" aluminum ducting $ 4.00
(had to buy a 48" duct)
2 Large Clamps (dryer duct size) $ 2.00
1 Black plastic Sewer connector 4" -> 6" $ 2.50
1 Black plastic Sewer connector 4" -> 3"x4" $ 2.50
1 Aluminum Oven Drip Pan $ 1.50
1 Small amount of black duct tape
=======
$27.00
All of these items were purchased either at Lowe's or Home Depot
1.) Remove the Black Air Hat from the TB, and the intake manifold
2.) Remove acordian rubber connector to the stock airbox.
- The acordian rubber connector can be used instead of the
3" Fernco coupler, but I used the Fernco coupler to reduce
airflow disturbance caused by the accordian shaped tube.
3.) Attach the Fernco coupler (or accordian tube) to the stock airbox
4.) Attach the Fernco Elbow to the TB.
5.) Measure the length of PVC Needed, and cut to fit.
(Make sure that you leave room for the PVC to go into the connectors)
6.) Paint the PVC pipe with High-Temp Paint, and let it dry
7.) Remove the plastic snorkel from the front of the stock airbox
8.) Remove the rubber flap on the passenger side of the radiator
9.) Open the stock airbox, and remove the air filter
10.) Modify the 4"->6" sewer connector by cutting down the large end.
11.) Put the sewer connector in the airbox so that the 4" end protrudes
out the front end of the airbox. (Where the snorkel used to be)
12.) Modify the 3"x4" Sewer pipe connector to fit around the A/C lines
in the grill next to the radiator, and put it in place.
13.) Attach to 4" aluminum ducting to each of the sewer connectors, and
fasten them with the large clamps. The clamps and ducting will help
to hold the sewet connectors in place.
14.) Lay the aluminum oven liner down, and flatten out all of the creases.
15.) Fold the liner over to create a double-thick aluminum sheet.
16.) Tape the open ends of the sheet together with black duct tape.
17.) Cut slits in the aluminum sheeting to slide over the A/C Lines
18.) Slide the Aluminum sheeting over the A/C lines, and against the
radiator and the stock airbox. This is used to deflect hot air from the
fan away from the aluminum ducting that feeds the airbox.
19.) Now that the PVC Paint is dry, assemble the Fernco couplers, and the
PVC pipe to the TC, and airbox, and clamp down tightly.
The only issues that I have had is in the fall, I occasionally suck a few
leaves into the airbox. I have driven in rainstorms, etc and it has had
no bad effects from this modification. However, I do have a K&N Drop-in
filter. I'm not sure how a paper filter would do if it got wet.
I have not had my truck on a dyno, so I can't state any performance improvements.
I do like the sound for the new intake, and it did seem to improve my
fuel mileage about 1 mpg.
