Subject: Question for Bernd IP: Logged
Message: Ok, Bernd...Ive had 3 people tell me in the last day that the new air set-up i just installed on my Dak is no good. I just put a K&N open element filter on (see pics) to be followed next Monday by a Reflexxion cowl induction hood. Now the gripe Ive been getting is that even with the cowl hood, the only air that the filter will use will be the hot air coming from the radiator flowing back as I drive. Is this true? Or will the cowl help? Someone told me that the IAT will then adjust my engine to run on hot air. Is that bad for the motor, or will it just not help out any on HP? Any help would be greatly appreciated, if help is needed at all. Thank you.

Message: Dan,
(1) The open element air cleaners (by themselves) will saturate with heat and will (generally) cause poor performance once heated up.
(2) The IAT Adjuster (once back in stock) does NOT damage the engine in anyway...neither will relocating the IAT to a cooler location (not in the chrome air filter though).
(3) The Cowl only works properly at higher speeds (45-50mph). I've got one and under 45...air blows out of the opening...over 45mph, air gets sucked in and also cools the engine compartment by 15 degrees.
The setup you have may work but I would look at one of the 14"x2" (or 14"x3") filters with the extreme lid to get the most out of the cowl hood. (And see about building a small box around the filter to seal it up against the hood.)

Message: Thanks for the info Bernd. What is the best way to go about building a box around the air filter? I originally tried to use a 14"x2" filter on my 3.9, but it wouldnt clear the firewall, which is why i went with the 10"x2". Is there an extreme lid that you can buy for the 10" filters? Thanks again...

Message: Bernd ,if I understand correctly regarding the cowl hood,function-wise it's good somewhat both ways, blows some excess heat out under 45 and pulls in cool air at 45+ to force out heat??
Yes,no,maybe?
