Message: Buy a K&N Cone and a rubber 90, $40 and $10, same HP gains. $270 is a ripoff and rediculous for an intake. Its too easy on engines without MAF's. Don't pay all that money just for the name. That's basically $230 for the plastic with a K&N stamp, the filter is the only thing worth a darn.

General K&N Question...
I have been trying to decide between K&N and WIX and Amsoil filters, as well as OEM ones used in the past. If you go to www.askjeeves.com and when this site comes up, type in "J726C" and enter, you will find some info on this testing method.
This test method SAE J726C is the industry accepted testing method for air filters. Most air filter manufacturers use this method except K&N. I have not been able to find any of K&N products tested to any automotive industry testing methods except their own in house testing. Maybe someone can find some information that I may have overlooked which would be helpful.
My neighbor threw out his K&N filter and went to a WIX air filter, but now he is an Amsoil customer and is going with them next. I would welcome info on WIX too, and any Amsoil comments.
I've been told K&N wants a silcon grease applied to the top and bottom of the filter. Can anyone explain this?
I had Amsoil filters on one of my trucks but sold the truck before I had a chance to test it and see for myself. This is my dilema. Do I try Amsoil again or should I try K&N or should I try WIX, etc. etc. Seems a lot of guys on this site use all different types.
I have been told by another friend that with K&N they say you never have to buy another air filter--simply clean it every 50K, re-oil, and re-install. Sorta sounds like the oil bath air cleaners that all my Uncles used decades ago (my dad included ... Happy Fathers Day Dad!). They were easy to clean and re-oil, but I'm not sure how efficient they were/are at trapping dirt. (My fathers filter was always terribly dirty throughout the part that was oiled)
Friends are confusing me any any help would be appreciated.

Message: There's no way to get that massive of a HP gain on a relatively stock 4.7L (I'm talking about 35HP). Gains like that would have to come from changing the intake, or changing internals (pistons and such), heads, exhaust with headers, etc etc etc...
The K&N Filter could net you a maximum of 3-5 RWHP with a totally stock 4.7L engine, and maybe 10-12 RWHP with previously done exhaust modifications. Computer chip/reflash might add 5-10 RWHP with a stock 4.7L, and maybe 10-15 RWHP with light to moderate performance mods. With just bolt-ons and exhaust/headers, you might get a maximum net gain of 40-50 RWHP over stock. Just my little bit of info...

Message: Speaking of K&N:
I was not impressed with K&N's new filter when it came out because it is heavy paper media and is efficient to only 98% at 35 microns,50% at 16 microns. So the amount of 10-20 microns particles trapped is not that impressive. However, I have read and been told that most wear paricles that do any real damage are 20+ microns or larger. Flow rate and not going into bypass mode may be more critical to reduced engine wear than the ability to remove ultra-fine particles. I have also been told that the smaller debris can be successfully and efficiently dispersed in a premium quality lubricant.
Bypass filtration on an automotive application and most smaller trucks is a waste of your money.Sure it filters incrementally smaller particles but you still have to change out the full flow filter or oxidation will increase and TBN will decrease as oil additives are used up by being depleted by the 20+ micron particles still circulating or loaded in the full flow.

Message:
K&Ns claims on making 10hp or more from just a filter change are not true.
The one thing that is true though is if you go with one of their full cold air kits, like the FIPK you MIGHT obtain +/- 10hp (I saw a one tenth reduction in my friends quarter mile time with a K&N FIPK he had).
But those gains come from eliminating the restrictive factory airbox, and adding a larger cone filter, not just changing the existing filter itself.
