Subject: V6 vs. V8???
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey all, first i tried searching, but couldn't find a good thread on this topic.

Im lookin to buy a Quad Cab 4x2 Dakota Sport Automatic, which i will use more for looks than for towing, and i am undecided as to which engine to get. MPG is a BIG concern for me as i am switching from a Honda Accord to a Dakota.

Is the V6 that underpowered? How much mileage will i lose with the V8, 1-2 MPG i can tolerate, but my first pic for a truck was the ram, too bad it drank gas like water :(

also, if i get a patriot blue sport pluse quad cab with a loaded interior for 22,300 on the road, is that a good price?

Thanks for the Help

Depends upon who you talk to. In my humble opinion, I would highly recommend getting the V8. The V8 option is only $500 more, and $500 worth of upgrades to a V6 will maybe get you 10 or 15 HP at the most. The gas mileage is the same, and actually a bit better, I've heard, than the V6 is. 50HP and a lot more torque for only $500 more is a pretty good deal.

Current mods: A MUFFLER. That's it. (For now.)
Future mods: Tonneau cover
Underdrive pulleys
Removal of clutch fan
K&N FIPK
17" rims
And much, much more.....

Thanks, im going to consider that. I think it's harder to pickup the 4.7L nowadays because they closed the factory down for the 2003, at least that's what some lady was telling me at a dealership

Say again? There's nothing wrong with the 4.7L plant. They're pumping it out in record numbers. If you really want a truck all your own, order it online with the option you choose (so as to minimize the overall price). Don't go through a dealer unless you have to. Or go to a dealer and go to the internet sales department (if they have one) and order your truck.

Huh, I'm not sure where she got that. Every Dodge dealer I've been to sure doesn't have any shortage of them. Now, do they have the exact model you want, but with a V8? Prob'ly not. I could either get a LOADED V8 model, or a LOADED V6 model, and that was about it. I DID have to search to get somewhat close to the stuff I wanted, with not much else. By itself, the V6 is not a bad engine...just a little underpowered for the truck it is in. It's plenty strong, but the Dak weighs a good 4500 lbs. Almost as fat as a Ford F150. And you will save NOTHING in gas mileage. My next truck will most likely be a Dak, and if it is, I'm definitely going with the V8.

also, the V6 4x2 pulls 18/19, while the V8 pulls 15/20, i think its 15/20

Yes, it's 15/20 for the 4x2 Dakota (4.7L), but with my exhaust (true duals and removed 3rd cat) it gets 17.0963 MPG city and 21.5587 on the highway. If I had a bed/tonneau cover, it would be higher still. I also use Mobil 1 5w30 Synthetic (the blue capped one), and I'm still indecisive on the best overall filter to use. I only have the K&N drop in filter in the stock airbox, but I'll get a new TB, intake, and computer reprogram to finish out my N/A power. Next year I'll have the S/C installed, and maybe even a little nitros oxide kit thrown in to boot. By the way, I got the 4.7L w/ the automatic, SLT Plus 4x2 Club Cab and I paid $21,000.00 That's what happens when you order it through the internet department.

Dont forget to check on the new 3.7 V6 Dak, if there out yet of course.

They have decent HP and even better economy over a 3.9 (so I have heard).

Just my .01 worth.
