Subject: Roller rockers and stock springs... IP: Logged
Message: I've been researching old threads on this site, but I haven't seen any reference made to the use of the stock valve springs with the Crower 1.7 roller rockers. My question is...does the slightly higher lift on the 1.7's do anything to prematurely weaken or fatigue the stock springs, which might necessitate a replacement or a valve job down the line? If replacement of the stock springs is recommended, I've heard that they can be replaced without removing the heads by blowing compressed air into the cylinder to hold the valves shut. What type of fitting and valve spring tool is needed to do this, and where could they be purchased? Thanks!...

I installed Crower 1.7s in my 5.9 Dak on Saturday. I had gathered all the parts necessary for a "complete" install: springs, guideplates, pushrods, tall valve covers.
The Springs are hard to find as Crower is out of them and they are not yet in production. Last Thursday, I talked to the Crower Tech and he told me that the stock cups and retainers should work on the Crower springs and he directed me to PAWinc.com whom he thought would have the springs in stock.
PAW had the springs($80 + $6.95 S&H) and I paid an additional $35 to have them over nighted to me on Friday. $42 for shipping an $80 part!!!! Anyway, I had to have them for my install.
Well on Saturday, with the "top end" of the motor off, we found that the stock hardware does not work with the Crower springs. So we had to put the RRs with the stock springs still in place.
The guy who was "helping" me is a Dodge Mechanic. He said the stock springs would be good for up to 6500 RPM (I don't believe it). He didn't know $hitt about installing the roller rockers. But that is another story.
He did have a "screw in attachment" that pumped air pressure into the cylinder through the spark plug hole. This held up the valve while we removed the spring. He had a special MAC tool that compressed the spring so that the keepers could be removed. We only removed one spring and it was a pain in the rear. I bet it would get a lot easier after you do a few.
So far I have not exceeded 4500 RPM (do not have 50 miles breakin on truck yet).
I have noticed a little more power and a LOT MORE ENGINE NOISE.
I'm going to have to find someone that knows WTF they are doing and have them re adjusted. I am getting lots of lifter noise.

Message: I installed mine a couple of weeks ago and they are quiet. You should not be getting alot of noise. I would take the vale covers back off and readjust them by the instructions provided before I drove it. The noise is only supposed to be at initial start up and go away. I however did not get the whole setup like you did. I just installed the rockers.

Message: The stock springs are fine unless you either:
(a) change the cam to a higher lift version
(b) plan on running the engin past 5200rpm
As for the noise, the rockers should be set at 0 Lash + 1/2 turn (average).

Footlong, if I may answer your question, 0 lash means that there is 0 clearance between the rocker and the pushrod. You can find this by spinning the pushrod between your fingers as you slowly tighten down the rocker stud nut. Just at the point where you can't spin the pushrod any longer is 0 lash, then, tighten the stud nut another 1/2 to 3/4 turn to preload it.
Crower has install instructions on their website, and I've seen them scattered around on other sites, as well. I think that Speedtweaks.net (Bernd's site) has them, too.

i think that with my M1 and the 52mm TB i will gain even more HP out of the 1.7 RR dont know yet will have to wait and see

Message: Stock springs, though pretty wimpy, are fine with the 1.7s. I ran 59k-14k=45k miles on my 1.7s, no guide plates, stock head w/ stock springs/valves.
Shifted at 5300 rpm all day long. No problems.
1.7s and mopar perf. headers raise my stock 204 hp to 230 hp rear wheels... Torque went from 270 to 320 torque!
Mod is fairly easy to do--- Mopar valve covers are recommended-- or knock the oil baffles (dimple) in your stock covers to clear the 1.7s.
Various places have the instructions posted--- or email me for what I have done. (will be including an installation Video soon with the Crower kits I sell)

Message: Don't you think the headers made up for most of that HP. Does anyone have a solid number on roller rocker gains? Are they worth the time & $.
