Subject: Still Pinging WTF??? IP: Logged
Message: I have tried everything I can think of and My truck still pings under boost. I have Autolite 3922, 180 thermo, BTM is set at 2degrees per Lbs of boost starting at 1lb., 24lbs injectors, the IAT is set at 12 o'clock, and I have a boost by-pass valve. The temp. guage stays well below 210, oil pressure is fine, no oil in coolant or coolant in oil, and no loss of oil so I don't think I have a head gasket problem. I always use either Sonoco 93 or 94. I haven't changed my cap, rotor or wires but I don't think that is it or is it? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Message: Yeah still have the beer barrel. I noticed some oil down there but it doesn't seem use any oil. Is that an indication I have the dreaded belly gasket leak or could it just be the PCV system?

Message: They do have some oil in them from the PCV. You said it was under boost right? Then oild couldn't get in under boost only under vacuume. I have heard Bernd say to go get the latest ping flash from chrysler and see if that helps. He only reccomended it in persistant cases kinda like yours.

Message: If your pinging under boost, And the BTM is cranked up, it should have compensated for timing plus some. I don't think the "Flash of death" will do anything but piss you off after you fix the problem. If it pings just before boost the concider the flash. Most people running s/c'ers are set at 1deg with 92 octane.
Mine didn't use oil (at least noticeable amounts) but I had the oil in the bottom of the keg. I'm thinking that when your not under boost is sucking oil, just enough to get things wet. A fine oil mist is not critical until you’re under boost. I pulled my plugs before I tore into mine to see if I could detect anything, no positive signs of oil were found. I did however find #5 plugs electrode busted. I suspect it's from the detonation. Replacing the plugs didn't help I still had to tear into it.
If you find you have to get into the keg, and you keep the keg, a 1/8" bead of red RTV on the gasket seems to be doing great for me with a new gasket. I have 4k on the repair and I have a heavy foot. Get a hold of an inch pound torque wrench, it is critical on the torque.
I hope this helps

Message: Thanks guys!! I think EyeTrip has the right idea. It only happens under boost and then only when it gets warm. If the motor is cold of I just started after setting all night no ping. After driving for 20 minutes or so it pings. Drtswinger do you still have the Keg or do you have the M-1. Looks like the M-1 is in my very near future.

Message: I was running 10 pounds on a stock 5.2 with the boost retard set to 0 degress per lb. But I am running a Vortech S-trim and not the powerdyne. No pinging.

Message: Powerdyne, Vortech, the ONLY diff is that the boost curve is different. If your running 10# it doesn't matter what puts it in there. Think about it.

Message: A little more info. for you. I've noticed that I only get five pounds of boost now, were as I used to get six pounds. I think it is sucking the oil in under vacuum and under boost it is forcing it into the combustion chambers. I also noticed it blows a large cloud of smoke when it pings. So the M-1 is on order.

Message: Thanks for all your help. I finally got my intake and installed it. I can now run 93 octane with the MSD pulling 1 degree per Lb. of boost and don't have any pinging. After I got the keg off I saw two areas were the gasket got pushed out. Got to love the M-1 no belly pan.

Message: Drtswinger, I am thinking of getting the 9lb. pulley, because I lost 1-1.5 lbs. of boost. I haven't changed the head gaskets yet so I'm a little scared of 9 lbs.(but it would really be 7.5-8lbs.) Sorry to hear your selling the truck, hope you had fun with it while you had it.]
