Message: We all know cool air intake is superior. Does anyone know why cool air will give more power than warmer air? What are the properties of cool air?

Message: Jeffster, I'd tell ya' but you made fun of my ancient dynosaur motor in another thread. You hurt my feelings so I'm going to have Mpjunkie answer this one for you. :-)
Besides, Mark's answer is the short sweet version.

Exactly what Mark said. Cooler air, denser charge, more oxygen (more "bang").

Message: Sorry Wayne. It's just I feel that the 5.9's days are coming to an end much the way the 5.2 did. The 5.9 has a lot more torque and is an almost destructible engine. If hardcore pulling power with no concern about fuel economy is your agenda the certaily the 5.9 has a place. If you are a poor working stiff like me then you will really appreciate the better gas mileage the 4.7 offers.
Thanks for the resopse on the cold air issue.

Message: Hey Jeffster, I'm just messing with ya'. I'm well aware of the new technology. The 4.7's have impressed me. I just wish they would have made it bigger. 5 to 5.5 liter with equivalent raise in hp would have made more sense to me.
Keep on truckin'. :-)

Message: Hey Ron,
A 5.7 MOPAR? That would make sense with the old 354 Hemi from the 50's! When and where did you hear that? It sounds good! Did you hear about any HP or torque ratings? I read in Hot Rod last year that the higher ups at Chrysler have or had plans to bring back the 354 Hemi in the full-size cars with it coming to Dakotas in 2003. Keeping my fingers crossed! HEMI

Message: That's the right size but they are pretty tight lipped about figures. The 300hemic concept had 353HP and 353TQ from 353 cubes. i have heard rumours in the 320hp range for the 5.7 and a 6.1L to come later with 350HP. Have to look back in my magazines to verify.

Message: need to know if the four speed I have can be swapped with any other tranny that will bolt to my block.(354 vt 488) I think the truck was a 58 Dodge K dump truck. It had a 4 speed with a pto. Is this tranny good for a street rod.(32 plymouth) I read about adapter plates but would rather have a tranny from the 50s or 60s. what kind of vehical would it have to come from? Would it be cheaper for an adapter and a newer tranny

Message: In response the the original question-here is the formula for calculating air density.--
d=1.325(Pb/T)
Where:
d=air density in pounds per cubic foot
1.325=constant
Pb=barometric pressure in inches of mercury
T=absolute temperature (air temperature in degrees Fahrenheit plus 460)
/ = division function
d=1.325(Pb/T)
More than you really wanted to know ;)

Message: Air is less dense as temperature and altitude increase. Therefore, if the air is different from standard conditions (70 F and 0.075 lbs/cf at 29.92 inches Hg barometric pressure), because of temperature and/or altitude, then the density is also changed.
Just a little more info.

Message: In response to the 5.7 Hemi. Should check out car-truck.com. Has a lot of info on the new engine. Going to be 345 ci which is on the small side of 5.7L. 330 hp and 360 tq. The 6.1 is supposedly going to be in the 350 hp range. The best part is it sounds like the 5.7L will definitely be in the redesigned daks!!
