I am interested in changing the sound of my Dakota. I removed the air filter and the top of the housing and drove for about 2 miles. I really like the change in the sound - It almost sounds like a 59 Ford I had a million years ago with a Holley 4 barrel.

Can I get this sound by only replacing the stock air filter with a K&N replacement filter ?

My local Advance Auto has the replacement filter for about 50.00 - is this a fair price?

Do I need an additional housing plus the K&N ?

Thanks in advance,
Ken

A K&N drop-in filter will give better airflow than the stock paper filter, but it won't change the sound. That airbox lid (along with the flexible hose and the baffles in the air "hat" on top of the maifold) all serve to muffle all the neat sounds that your truck could be making.

To get a better sound you can use any one of a few things, and they all use an open air filter:

1. A Z-tube will give you the open air filter and get rid of the flexible hose and baffles in the air hat.

2. The K&N kit due out this summer will do a similar thing, but has the advantage of using a plastic tube (instead of a metal one on the Z-tube). The plastic will help reduce heat transfer from the engine compartment to the air in the intake tube. This is also why Dodge uses a plastic intake runner setup.

3. An Airaid will give you the open filter complete with a heat shield, but it leaves you with the flexible tube and the baffled air hat.

As for the price on the drop-in air filter, $40-$50 is about what I've seen them priced at, depending on the size.
