Has anyone ever heard of water injection usage on a vehicle?

On aircraft they inject atomized water into the intake. The evaporative cooling lowers teh air temperature and the water vapor expands in the combustion chamber for greater power output.

It may help with pinging by cooling the combustion process.

Anyone heard of anything like this available on the market?

Dave

Heh, we just had a discussion on this a while back in another post about turbos. It pretty much came down to that it does work pretty good on lower boost applications, but higher things like air to liquid intercoolers are preffered.

Yes, it is available, specifically for vehicles and is widely available on the market. You don't really need to spend all the money on this if it's for just a regular NA engine, you can reduce detonation other ways -- cheaper ones.

Kenne Bell has one for their superchargers BTW.

Had one on an '80 B200 with a 360 hp 360cid. It helped to reduce pinging, but the 'brains' have to be located in a cool place. Engine compartment is too hot and will cook it. Replacement is expensive!,...D

Saab actually uses the windshield washer fluid. (it's there, it doesn't freeze) When it's out the engine just detunes itself to compensate.

Try mounting A second windshield washer bottle/ or use the one that came with the truck.
Drill two holes in the cap, take A hose from the intake manifold ( manifold vacuum, not port vacuum ) and connect it to the cap from the top side only going through the cap about 1/2 inch or less.
take another hose and connect it to the under side of the second hole.
make the hose about 1/2 inch short of touching the bottom of the container, install one of those stones you use in A fish tank that air is blown through.
fill the container with water ( do not fill to the top).
When the engine is running, A vacuum is created in the container pulling air through the opening in the cap forcing air through the stone causing air bubbles in water, then brings air rich in cool moisture into the engine.
Would not recommend using this while 4 wheeling due to splashing water will be sucked into the engine.

bryan are you joking? that seems like a fesable and good idea I might like to try. it seems it might cool the air a tad.

have you tried it? does it work?

could you email me some pics and info.

I have not tried it yet, It is something I picked up from hanging around some old time hot rodders who talk about what they did in their younger days.
Some of these new gadgets that are coming out, are not new, some were made back in the 50's and 60's. It's just that most people have forgotten about them.

Water injection is a band-aid for poor fuel/timing mangagement...

With the correct amount of fuel and proper timing, there is no need for water/alcohol injection...

Bryan, do you put the stone at the bottom of the resovoir or on top of the cap in the air?
I'm want to try this it seems like a good idea.

The stone should be at the bottom of the container, as the water evaporates the stone will stay under the water. The air has to pass through the water to pick up the moisture.
remember to connect the stone to the hose that goes to the cap. NOT the one that goes to the engine.

Tom Slick...

You are so correct. BUT I have seen the owners manual for the 4.7L and heard plenty of posts on these very forums about problems with pinging due to the stringent standards forced upon us by those who want to save the earth and drive old beat up vans and Volkswagons.

So... I was providing some insight to alternatives to these people.

I REALLY wasn't asking for some unhelpful comment that states the obvious to those who want to increase their performance posting useful messages in this forum.

So... I would appreciate it if you would refrain from such useless drivel and take it somewhere where else to those of a less adult nature who will accept it as beautiful prose.

I thank the rest of you for the insight and information.

BTW, I did find a manufacturer that makes a kit that works with intercoolers on the rigs that have turbos. And I did see one that recommended washer fluid. Another suggested denatured alcohol to a percentage of 20%, but stated that denatured alcohol contains a slight amount of methanol which is a bad idea according to the owners manual.
