Subject: Stock pipes with new muffler?
IP: Logged

Message:
I don't know much about exhaust... if I got a Flowmaster 40 or 50 series and keep my existing pipes and all, will it help performance or do i need bigger pipes? I'm not sure what the stock sizes are.

It's a 2000 3.9, I'm about to install an R/T TB and possibly a chip as well as the 180*... any help would be greatly appreciated.

that is all you need to do. the cat back aftermarket systems pretty much are "getyourmoney" schemes as the stock exhaust systems are stainless to begin on your Dak and tha aftermarket ones are usually plain steel that is aluminized and rust out pretty fast unless you pay about $425 in parts alone for a full stainless system. with the after market pipes unless they are sized wrong are usually really close to the same size that comes stock on Daks. Especially on the 3.9's as the pipes on them are the same size (diameter) as the stock 5.2 the only problem you will have is the aftermarket muffler is shorter then the stock muffler but you can fix that with a short piece of pipe from your local auto parts store. And yes you will gain a few r/wheel hp with a flowmaster. I saw a test in last years Off Road 4X4 Magazine on a truck that compared a full cat back system to a stock system with a Thrush turbo muffler that was dyno tested and there was only about a 1 to 2 hp difference between a $250 cat back system and a $15 turbo muffler on a stock system. Both showed about 22 HP on over a stock V8. Its your money...

Same answer here. There is no need to buy a cat-back system unless you are changing the size or location of the stock exhaust. Even then, your local muffler shop can do the same thing.
Just installing a performance muffler will give you the same results as a cat-back system.

Would there be much of a improvement in sound, if you just put on a muffler (ie. flowmaster) in place of the stock muffler.

I put a Flowmaster Deltaflow 50 series on my 99 SLT 4x2, 3.9V6/Auto with the standard cat and exhaust tubing. I'm pleased with the results: slight power gain, better sound, slight mpg gain.
But it works best with a cold air intake/K&N.
I did have to turn the muffler body up at an angle (looking from the rear) to make sure it cleared the driveshaft. Other than that it was a pretty easy installation.
