Subject: Radiator cap and "Nucleate Boiling" IP: Logged
Message: Interesting article to read http://www.ecpe.vt.edu/%7edfritz/technical/gas/trouble/ping.htm
I replaced the radiator cap (ref. solution 4 in the above article) with a Stant 20lb cap and twice, the radiator leaked. It has NEVER leaked with the 16lb OEM cap so I put it back on, no more leaks.
Anyone know why??
BTW, I am also trying the Chevron Techron treatment.

Message: No idea on the radiator leaks, but I have to add my 2 cents on Techron. Great stuff! In a previous vehicle I had to have a fairly expensive procedure done to remove carbon buid-up, and the mechanic that did it recommended using Techron regularly. Never had a problem with carbon build-up since then in any vehicle. I put in a bottle about once every 3000 miles, and I only use Chevron gas. Cheap insurance against expensive carbon removal.

Message: The 20 pound cap probably strains the radiator beyond the point it can conatin the pressure between 16 and 20 pounds. The 16 pound will release the pressure the overflow at 16 pounds right? The radiator can handle that amount of pressure. What was the theory behind the 20 pound cap anyways?
