Subject: Ignition timing IP: Logged
Message: Have a 97 with a 5.3. Acclerating hard it starts pinging at the top end as if timing is wrong. Checked several times changed all the usual even had it in for a DRBII check and no codes were found. Higher octane fuels improve performance but still pings even with h octane. Any help would be appreciatd. thanks

Message: Try a 180 thermostat, and a set of colder plugs (such as Autolite 3923s). I run on 87 octane with no ping at all ('99 CC auto, 3.55 gears).
The other possibilty, is that you have a blown belly-pan gasket. That requires you to remove the intake manifold to get to it (it's really a plenum gasket, a poor design IMHO).

Message: Thanks. I'll go with the plugs first and see what happens.
