Subject: No Muffler?????? IP: Logged
Message: This is a shot in the dark, but what about (on a 2002) removing the muffler, leaving the third cat and running dual pipes out the rear?
what's your comments on power and sound?
I'm getting ready to put an exhaust on but can't decide where I wanna go. I need more performance at higher speeds, (40-80mph) I do have an intake mod so that should help. I want either duals out the rear or turn-downs, (no offense) I really don't like the look of side exit exhaust.

I have a Magnaflow Muffler on there also.

Message: Nice truck, I really like the tips, So what's your setup? I realize you have M-flows, but what about a cat? I really don't wanna spend the cash on a cat back.
I figure why spend the money on a free flowing cat, when I can just remove it, I live in MI and we don't have emission checks, so I'm good to go there.
I just want something that sounds mean (not like sh!t), without looking like ass, and doesn't totally kill my performance. In fact I need more power at higher speeds anyways so if it helps me there the better.

Message: I can't answer the cat thing since I live in CA, if I could have I would have taken it off. I don't have an intake or anything like that yet. all I have so far is the Autolite 3923 plugs and I am going to install a 180 t stat that I got just yesterday.
as for added HP in the upper RPM range, I think that I gained a little bit there since the magnaflow muffler has very little restriction (you can see right through it).
Sound wise, I really like the way that it sounds. It's got a nice growl to it when I step on it and great purr when at idle.
Don't know if this helps any, but I hope that it can a little.

Message: Well that tells me I'm not the only one thinking of hacking out the cat. There's a Muffler Man a couple miles from my house that put an exhaust system on my 1977 Charger, about 5 years ago, without any cats. So I took my truck up there, and he said, he'll remove the third cat, put a performance muffler in and run it out into duals, then he said, "$300 cash, and you were never here" You know damn well he's probly buying the muffler from his work for $20 and running the rest of the pipe for free and keeping the other $280 for himself.
I don't care as long as it gets done.
Thanks for all your help and (probably) Sunday I'll take some pics and post them.

Message: ok ... hers my idea... ive got a 3.9 V6 2000 dak...
cut everything off right after the y-pipe off the manifold....right before the the cat(cut it off) take a flowmaster single inlet and dual outlet....from the Y plug it into the single in and then run dual straight pipes out to the back... this will still enable you to plig the sensors in b4 the muff. and then plug the secondary sensor in after the muff ( in place of the cat) on one side of the pipes,, this should still light up your O2 sensor as to not screw with the comp..... n e ideas suggestions added to that let me know!! thanx

Message: Using the muffler as a cat will not fool the sensors. The muffler doesn't remove crap from the exhaust like the cat does so the before and after O2 sensor will be reading the same, which will throw the code. You could try to just pull the after o2 sensor and wrap in some heat tape and tie it to the frame. Then is will be getting a cleaner reading then the first sensor so the truck will think the cat is working. This works for some but not everybody, if it doesn't work get the KatBox from KRC.

Message: Correct me if I'm wrong but since there's not a sensor after the third cat, I could technically remove it without throwing a code???????

Message: I'm not a truck expert or an exhaust guy but why would you cut off the cat and then put a muffler there? Doesn't that defeat the purpose? Why just save some money and leave the cat and not bother with with a muffler. And I feel for you guys with 3 cats. My 92 has one. Blame it on the germans I guess.

Message: Hey 92dakotahd,
(trying not to be an @ss here) I think there has been some confusion down the line, actually I want to remove the cat (which you were on track with that) but I'm not putting a muffler in it's place, I'm putting a piece of pipe, and then have that go into the hp muffler, than out to duals.
So I'll have:
manifolds
a set of 02's
a set of pre-cats
another set of 02's
then pipe leading to the "Y-pipe"
a 3" pipe going to the existing muffler, but instead of the OE muffler I'm going with a HP muffler (haven't decided yet)
than out to duals
(so I'm completely eliminating the 3rd cat, changing the stock muffler to a hp muffler, and splitting from the muffler out to duals)
so does that help clear it up?
I think it's not so much the Germans fault as it is the tree huggers (government) fault, They want these automotive manufactures to be almost 100% non pollutant, that they have to do some ridicules things to achieve lower emissions.
Look at it this way, DC could have put an 02 sensor after the 3rd cat making it harder to remove the cat without any e-codes.
But that's another topic.

Message: ITS THE SAME CONCEPT YALL ARE GOING ON! CUTTING OUT THE CAT AND HAVING A MUFF LATER IS THE SAME AS PUTTING THE MUFF IN PLACE OF THE CAT....IM JUST CUTTING OUT HTE DUMMY SHELL THAT YA'LL WILL HAVE AND MOVING THE MUFF BACK IN ORDER TO CONTOL THE SESNORS AS TO NOT SCREW UP THE COMP,,,
HEY HERCIRD HAD A ? FOR YA
THE PRIMARY SENSOR B4 THE CAT WILL READ THE SAME AS IT ALWAYS HAD ... THERE IS NOTHING BLOCKIN THE FLOW BESIDES THE Y-PIPE RIGHT NOW SO IF I PUT A MUFF ON AFTER THAT SENSOR THEN ITS THE SECONDARY SENSOR I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT ,,, CORRECT? OR NO? SO WOULD THIS HEAT RAP STUFF UR TALKING ABOUT WORK ON THAT APPLICATION?
AND WHATS A KATBOX BY KRC .. NEVERHEARD OF THAT
