Message: Someone on here said that the Dakota uses watercolors for paint. I now have to agree. After unloading a load of mulch (yeah, gotta use it like a truck once in a while), I used a soft nylon broom to clean out the bed. I brushed the top side of the bed, and left deep scatches across the whole right side. I haven't tried to wax them out, but am now wondering when I wax it for the first time, will I go to the primer in one swipe?

Message: Cam, I think I might have mentioned it on here that the dealer once told me that Dodge uses water based paint because of environmental concerns with the solvent based paints. Many manufacturers are having their body panels painted in Mexico to avoid the EPA restrictions.
Try some of the clay bar products on the scratches,it might work.My personal preferance is with the Clay Magic brand.Good Luck!

Message: A clay bar will show those scratches even better since it removes all contaminants from the surface -- including most waxes.
I would try Some 3M 39009 (light or dark depending on your car colour) and see how that works for you and use some good swirl remover and get that wax in there. For the most part, if you are using it as a work truck, you either live with it, or find some type of protection for it -- least that's what I've found. I was unloading a couple loads of dirt last weekend and got quite a few myself. Dirt never hit the sides much, but just brushing off the little dirt on the rails with my hands or jumping into the truck and putting my hands on the dirty sides/rails created scratches! Need that line-x!

Message: As an automotive painter for 12 yrs. , the only veh. that use a waterborne paint system as Saturn , and that has nothing to do with the clearcoat , they are still solvent based right now. I will guess that you have a darker colored truck , as a white-silver doesn`t show the scratches as well...they still get them , they`re just harder to detect. My Dakota is black and it shows everything.
There are different degrees of hardness of paint however and explikt is correct , a clay bar will clean the contam. off of the paint and scratch it more. If you use that just make sure to use a fine compound and/or polish to get the scratches out before you wax it. Sometimes waxing over scratches makes them show even more.
