Subject: I think I f'ed up with my tire purchace IP: Logged
Message: Fellow Dak'ers...
Need your reassurance on this one.
I recently installed 255/55 17 on my new R/T rims for my 4X4 Quad. I checked tire rack and this was the recommended tire size for my application. I think it was really intended for the 4X2. My OEM was 31X10.5 15. I have no idea what my actual speed is and I hope I'm not screwing up my engine and drive train. Am I losing acceleration too?
Truck handles a lot better though, cornerning, smooth ride, and I don't notice any lag just that my RPM's have shot up for the speed I'm actually driving. How about milage?
What do you guys think?
Thanks in advance.

Message: You replaced your 31" tall tire with a 28" tall tire and this has raised your NUMERICAL gear ratio from your stock ratio to something really deep. Like if you had 3.55 gears, you now have soemthing equivalent to a 4.10 gear (maybe even more). Great for acceleration, kinda sucky for gas mileage. Hmmmmm.....
OOps.

Message: I read somewhere that for every inch change in tire diameter , is = to about .10 in axel ratio.
31" tire - 3.55
30" - 3.65
29" - 3.75
28" - 3.85
and so on.
One thing that sucks is yer speedo will be reading faster and you`ll be putting on more miles than you are actually traveling.

Message: Thanks guys....
I'm not concerned about the milage. Damage in the long term? to the drivetrain and engine is what's bothering me. I bought the new wheels/tires for the summer.
Your right about acceleration she's a little faster.
... but what's the verdict did I make a good buy?!?
Thanks again!

Message: No more damage than if you had ordered the truck with a deeper gear ratio. If you like the look and don't mind the gas mileage, then you're the man.

Message: I would say that you are doing no damage whatsoever. The rear tires are just spinning a little faster and you`ll have a little more low end torqueyness. Torqueyness , is that a word ?
