I've seen home made cowl induction setups using a metal pan underneath the air cleaner sealed to the hood. Here's my idea. I have the stock air cleaner assembly on my 96 3.9L. I plan on cutting off the stock air duct and sealing up the edge of the air hat. Then i will cut a 2" wide hole in the top of the air cleaner that goes about 1/3 around. I will weld 1 3/4" tall sides around the hole and put foam around the top to seal against an identically sized hole in the hood, underneath the scoop.

What do you think?

Rain doesn't get under there too much but that is one thing to think about. I didn't get a v8 because i got this v6 for half it's bluebook price. Besides i bet my v6 and many others on this board are faster than your v8, and we can turn more revs.

I am tired of hearing about sixers being as fast as the eights.Yes you can make them fast quarter mile trucks with nitrous. wooop de doooo Dakotas are sport trucks as well and I dont understand how you hittin the bottle to beat me in the quarter mile makes you faster lets go for a ride through the hills and corners and us v8's will leave you behind like yesterdays trash. We have that power all the time not just in the QM.

Lets go for it! Its not so much the difference in the 6 and the 8 in the corners and hills and dirt roads, its the drivers. Im ready anytime to hit the windy dirt roads when you over rev and get really squirrly and get into trouble, we will see who will leave who in the dust. I know from experience, the v8 is very bad about trying to get away on the gravel at high speeds. Plus, I know how it bogs through the corners. Again, it comes down to auto or stick and how good the drivers are.

Kick the tires and light the fires!

Who said anything about nitrous? I'm just saying that with a few MINOR mods the v6's are as fast as v8's plus they get better milage. I have seen 4 bangers making 500HP w/o nitrous, so it's safe to say that the old expression "there's no replacement for displacement" is no longer true.

You'd have to have a lot of mods to make a 175hp V6 behave like a 250hp V8 with the same suspension, drivetrain and body style. C'mon... I'm not foolish enough to think my V6 is as fast or faster than a V8. That, to me, is like comparing apples to oranges. It's kind of funny seeing how defensive the V8 guys get when someone suggests such things though. =)

Here is an unbiased opinion for you. Ihave a 99 RT which I have bracket raced for 3 years. I also had,at the same time, a 99 dakota with a totally stock v6 for a work truck. My 18 year old daughter raced the v6. The RT was faster but it also had been modified and the stock v6 was not too much slower. If I was going to build an NHRA or IHRA truck for class racing where they factor in h.p and weight, I would build a v6 because they flat haul ass right from the box. Didn't have to worry about tire spin with the v6 either. Now to the original topic you were discussing. I put a reflexxion cowl induction hood on my RT and was also thinking about sealing the intake area to the hood. If all I did was race the truck, this is the best way to go. However, if it is also a street driven truck, you should build a pan under the hood which will channel air around the tb and intake manifold. Build another pan under the throttle body which will be about one inch less around the sides than the hood pan with a lip around the edge facing up. At speed, your throttle body will be getting all the cool air it needs and while sitting still, this design will take heat out of the engine compartment. It will not allow heat to build up around the intake manifold. This is the best all around for a street driven truck.

Hey Jon ,
Where do you shift you're V6 at? I usually shift my old , slow 360 at 6,300 , The stock 318 mag in my girlfriends Dakota usually works pretty good shifting at 5,200. Last time I saw the inside of a 3.9 it was still a 318 with 2 cyls missing , unless you've done something trick like shortening the stroke and building a different intake manifold to replace the beer keg you will be shifting at the same rpm as a 318.

Is it just me or does 4.7 V8 have overhead cams?

um, if you mod the V6 and V8 the same way you're back to square one. Sorry man, there's just no substitute for Cubic Inches.

And have you noticed that the 4.7 also gets better gas milage than the V6?

Joe: I shift mine at around 6,000, a few hundred before the rev limiter kicks in.

I do have an update though on my plans for the intake. I bought one of those 6" round air cleaners and made a spacer out of pvc. I also got a longer threaded rod to hold the air cleaner on. I am going to cut a hole in the hood so that the air cleaner sticks through the hood up underneath the scoop. I am going to fashion some sheetmetal duct work to keep any water that goes down the scoop off of the TB and distributer. In the winter i will put the stock air cleaner back on because water and ice are bound to work there way down there.

Jon who flashed the PCM for you? that is not the stock rev limiter. what valve springs do you have?

even if you could spin the engine to 6k, why would you want to? the sock manifold stops producing power at like 4400 rpm
