Message: Ive heard bad things about those, a while back in a different thread, they said that when they installed one, it made less HP and TQ than stock. Im looking at the KRC cams, right now theyre on sale for 249....check them out.

Message: kota you are so right. When set up properly a "purple shaft" that has .474 lift and 284 duration is able to hump out 425 hp on a pre magnum 318 with 360 sixpack heads. I had one many years ago ina duster that ate up many unsuspecting big block fords and chuvys and pontiacs and even some oldsmobubbles.

Message: What are you talking about as far as "purple cam". The only ones I heard of were the old LA engine like in my '79. They were a flat tappet design not roller. Old technology cheap but most don't work with fuel injection. They don't make as much power either.
Bill the cat I think you are dreaming. The six pack set up was on the 340 and they were the desirable T/A heads with the off set rockers.

Message: the only problem you run into with new engines period with cams is the computer recognizing and maximizing the air flow a friend of mine put on in and notciced a fall of in power because it was running way too rich so he put a super charger on his 318 and doubled the horse power with the cam super charger reprogrammed computer port and polished heads, headers, and bigger bore throttle body, that thing would hump down the track 4 wheel drive was smoking mustangs and camaros so if you want to maximize you gains from the cam you have to find a way to add more air to the cylinder and with alot of the stock equiptment it will restrict and and all you will do is run rich

Message: CW,
Did you know the early 360 used the 340 6pack head? To be exact 71&72 casting #3418915. Casting was the same however some machining was different ie. offset pushrod holes and valve size.

Message: Yes I do. I have a set sitting in my shed right now they have been bowel ported and converted to 2.02 intake with dual valve springs. They were the J-heads. There were the X-heads as well but the T/A heads. They had off set rockers for bigger intake ports they flowed some good numbers from the factory.

Message: J 360 heads were mearly cast off a similar mold, they are not T/A heads, like you all have stated J's had standard rocker gear but the biggest difference was the small valves, 1.88/1.60, not even close to T/A's 2.02's.
Very first year 360 is different than production blocks years after also.
Direct Connection book tells of guys boring it to .70 over and using a .30 340 piston and shaving the piston top down a little.
I think I remember that that gave you 372 cube's, not sure though.
Oh and yes, Purple cams are for premags, nonroller hyd cams.

Message: Yes my heads are off of a '71 360 casting date of 6/70 if I remember correct. Mine are not T/A heads. It had the 1.88 intakes but the bigger runners. A good set of heads to put 2.02s in. :) If I had the money I would think about getting them race ported.
I have a '79 318 with the 268° 272° .450" .455". That cam in a 318 only idles at 10" of vacuume at idle. I need a set of 3.9s or 4.10s for it.
