Subject: Whats with my SLOWcharger IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 r/t. I have gone through my fair share of head gasket problems, and now I have another. I start my truck in the morning, drive for a few minutes, get the pedal to the floor, and the truck is incredibly fast, from start to finish, no problem burning the tires at 20 until 60. no lies there. But gimmie 15-20 minutes, and my truck has turned into a pile of dung. Slow, huge lack of torque and high end. Sometimes i have trouble spinning the tires from a stop. Its a real turd. As for what I have. Powerdyne, 6 lbs., msd btm set at 1 1/2, high flow cat, flowmaster, K&N air filter, 24 # ford injectors... and i have gauges saying that I am definatly still hitting 6 lbs. of boost, and my fuel pressure is staying within spec. I have noticed after plenty of driving, the powerdyne gets pretty hot, is this normal? If you wanna know how slow it gets, let me give you an examle.. yesterday, a 99 rt with m1, cold air, exhaust, and a pcm beat me. not by a fender, but a good 1-2 cars. The reason I didn't go to Sanger is because i knew I would embarrass myself. please help. I know its running great when the truck has been sitting... the difference is a good 75-100 hp.

sound like it's getting heat soaked...a boost bypass valve can help some... At Houston last year, One guy had a Kenne-Bell on his R/T and ran great the first two runs, then it bacame a dog... the reason was a heat soaked intake sytem and supercharger.

Message: Are you running the stock filter that comes with the powerdyne kit? I know that filter is small and will not flow great amounts of air. I would say check the thermostat, possibly run Redline water wetter with the coolant or try Engine Ice coolant with the additive to run 15-20 deg. cooler. I can imagine the heat the motor and the charger build under the hood, you may just need to get a ram air hood! J/K

Message: We replaced the Powerdyne filter on a '99 R/T with a K&N 6x9" and made 1.5# more boost. The filter that's supplied with the Powerdyne kit is rather small and can't keep up at higher boost levels.
On the heat issue: 180 t'stat, 3923's, and relocate the IAT sensor BEFORE the supercharger. Otherwise, you'll be super-heating the IAT sensor and it will run rather sluggish.

Message: this is just a thought but, could you go to a hardware store and get some dryer hose, and rout it so it would cool the supercharger? kinda so the hose gets cold air from the front of the truck, and blows on the supercharger, making the supercharger cooler.

Message: A boost bypass valve is recommended on 6# and required on 8#+. The S/C makes boost regardless of throttle position and can build up pressure to the point of heating up the unit. The boost bypass valve releases the pressure to atmosphere and closed when vacuum is at or below 4" (passing, 3/4 throttle, WOT). This also helps keep the S/C a lot cooler (up to 50 degrees cooler).
A bigger intake filter (not the factory powerdyne unit) will also help keep the S/C cooler as it doesn't have to work as hard to draw in the air.

Message: I have the 160 thermostat, and the IAT is relocated before the charger. I have the K&N filter upgrade, the fuel system is the powerdyne kit... fuel pump and fmu, hitting 71 psi under boost, and i have the purple ice from royal purple in the cooling system. The boost bypass valve was ordered last week, so it should be here any day. Im running ngk plugs, the cooler ones. This has been a problem even bofore the msd btm. but just for reference, I keep it at 1 1/2 degrees. To much? maybe when the timing changes after warming up thats to much? I do know that the charger gets to the point where it feels as hot as the intake manifold. It gets very hot. I know motors hate hot air.... and my guess is that this is it. Also, could it be the sensor that registers to much vacuum under boost? maybe I need to fix that. Anyways, It just doesnt make any sense, I wouldn't think it would SLOW my truck down. thanks for the help, keep em comin'

Besides the fact I already tore my rear-end by power breaking and off roading, I must say I love my dak:)

I can find the pictured one though. Does this little contraption make a difference? Im trying to figure in any reason why my truck this doing this before I decide to sell the charger. anyways.... what I speak of definatly isn't normal right? I mean seriously, what could be causing this? Heat... I dunno cause it did this in the dead of winter.... just imagine summer performance when it hits 103. haha, my truck will be a joke. Is there any kind of internal charger problem that could be causing excessive heat? Im looking for answers but im not finding them cause im all outta ideas. oh well.

Message: Tell me about the fuel system that comes with the Powerdyne.
Does it use a secondary pump?
Does it use a FMU?
Does it continuously recirculate the same fuel?
How are the fuel lines routed?
After you drive the truck and it starts to slow down.... can you touch the fuel rail without burning your fingers?

Message: Your truck will still heat up even if it is the dead of winter, it will just take longer. But since summer is right around the corner, if your truck dies out faster now then it did in winter, then you know it is a heat related problem, or you would think it was.

Message: OK, anybody correct me if im wrong. Basically on the drivers side frame rail there is an aftermarket fuel pump that clicks on with the ignition. fuel lines connect it to the fmu which sits on the firewall connected to a vacuum sorce. once boost is detected the fmu stops the recirculation then opens up the added fuel flow to the line connecting to the fuel rails. pressure will steadily climb to the low 70's then start to fall a little. as for the fuel rails being to hot to the touch, im not sure but as soon as the trucks gets out of he body shop, i will let you know. what should it feel like.? one thing I noticed is when i start the truck after sitting, the fuel pressure will sit at 55, but after hitting boost, it will never go back down from 60-61. is this to much pressure for idle and cruise? it still goes up but i remember it going much higher now that I think about it. I've seen it get up to the high 80's. is that right?

| Hotter and Hotter! IP: Logged
Message: The pressure will increase as the fuel gets hotter. With the FMU style of fuel control system, the same fuel keeps circulating between the aftermarket fuel pump on the frame rail and the FMU. This keeps heating up the fuel more and more. When the fuel gets hot enough, it will actually turn to a vapor instead of a liquid. My guess is that after everything gets hot enough, all you are getting is vapor on the passenger side of the fuel rail. One whole bank of the engine is lean while the other side is normal..... or rich in comparison. Have you pulled the plugs lately? It might help you diagnose this issue if you did. Pay careful attention to where your fuel lines are running. Do they come anywhere close to the exhaust as it comes up from the frame rail?
Mine was acting somewhat the same way. I measured the temperature of my fuel rails.... they were just under 300 degrees! That was way too hot. I moved the fuel lines as far away from any heat source as I could and then insulated them also. This seemed to help quite a bit. This fuel heating issue has always been a problem with the Dodge trucks. Without a return system, the fuel can't help bet get hotter on one side of the engine. Adding the FMU and recirculating the fuel just makes it hotter than it already was!

Message: That definatly sounds like a possibility. maybe why the pressure stays so much higher once it gets warmed up... the vapor is expanding. I've always wondered if fuel problems have been my culprit. But its almost definate.... heat is the factor thats killing me, and bad. My plugs though... they didnt show any differences.... when i pulled my heads they both looked like the same amount of wear and color change except for the ones with blown water jackets. anyways, about how hot should the rails be... warm, hot, or untouchable after plenty of driving. Im sure I can reroute the lines a little bit, and get some insulation wrapped around them to cool it off. I wonder if they make fuel injection fuel coolers... I've seen fuel coolers, but i think they were for lower pressure applications.

Message: That's good that the plugs and combustion chambers looked the same..... except for the ones with the blown water jackets. Definately check out those fuel lines, and insulate them if you can. The fuel rail will still be very hot to the touch, but even a 50 degree change might be huge when it comes to the fuel. I don't know of any coolers that are available for use with the pressures we see on the fuel lines.
