Subject: Am I ready for 9#'s ? IP: Logged
Message: Ok, as some of you probably know, I have a 99 r/t with the powerdyne. I'm dying to put on the 9# pulley, but I'm still a little cautious. Because as you probably also remember, I have gone through 2 sets of head gaskets. Well now the pinging is gone... thanks to the msd btm... and I'm thinking the risk of blowing them is gone too, but I'm not sure. I have the powerdyne blower with the msd btm, 24# injectors, coil, high flow cat and flowmaster, bigger k&n filter, along with fel pro head gaskets, and arp head bolts... SO, am I ready for the niner?

Message: I am sure you could, but with the set you have, I am putting on almost the same setup, but I am getting the M1 intake, ported and polished heads and 1.7 Rockers. I am replacing my MSD6A w/ the 6BTM, and upgrading my injectors as well. If you got the nitrous head gaskets and studs, you should be alright. BTW- With my new heads, I have to run 9# because some of the boost is lost because of the freer flowing heads. It would actually be running at about 7#s.
Were you blowing gaskets with the 6#?

Message: yes. but only because the btm wasnt hooked up and the engine pinged real bad. I plan on doing an m-1 and rockers along with a throttle body and headers too. but this is when I get the money, and working of a high school student budget, its kinda difficult.

Message: I had no detonation problem with 11 psi yet I blew my head gaskets. I read this is your second or third time. It sounds like to me you need to get your heads resurfaced. Your heads aren't as true as you think. When I blew the 10008's and stepped up to the Mr. Gasket solicors and I had my heads resurfaced. No problem since. I'd be affraid in your case to run 9 psi with out your heads resurfaced.

Message: drtswnger: We've got a '99 R/T running out here with the Powerdyne @ 9# for about a year now without any problems. 24# injectors, MSD, PCM "Detonation Fix" flash, and stock head gaskets/intake/cam/rockers. No pinging.

Message: bernd, what do you mean by detonation fix flash? i'm getting ready to order a powerdyne and i have the mopar pcm. should i get rid of the pcm? will the msd btm retard it enough to not matter?

Message: Simple little fix for some of the pinging problems. While the "Detonation Fix" PCM flash from the dealer does reduce performance slightly on naturally aspirated engines, it's work very well on the supercharged engines that we've worked on. 1997-2001 all have a PCM flash program (dealer can only do this) that retards the timing slightly (1-4 degrees across the board). This is just about perfect to control the slight pinging with the truck running 6-9# boost...but a last ditch effort.
If you're running a Mopar PCM, DO NOT HAVE THEM FLASH THE PCM.
Slider: It varies from vehicle to vehicle on the Mopar PCM not "pinging" on the trucks. Some don't need any timing removed while others revert back to their factroy PCM or a custom PCM program.

Message: We tested the heads here at my work with a strait edge, and they were true. My truck would have blown the gaskets again had I been with the old setup the last two times. Now that the ticking/taping sound is gone... no problems are seeming to arise. Im almost positive they kept blowing because the pinging... it was very audiable. now that the btm is on and working, I can tell it got rid of the ping. under my hood there is a dealer sticker showing that the pcm was flashed or reprogramed (like this when I got it) Is that what your talking about bernd? Also, I think Im going to wait for your boost bypass valve to come in before I hook up the nine pound pulley.

Message: Bernd, will the bypass valve get rid of the heat building up in the charger and free up some horsepower? Cause when the truck has sat all night and I have drivin it to op. temp, and get on it, It is incredible fast, but as I drive it seems to get more and more sluggish. For instance, when the truck gets up to the temp range and i floor it at 20, it will spin and be squirrly up until about 60.... this is when its so fast it scares me. then after it has been driven for a while, its so much slower I have trouble trying to get the tires to bark during a twenty punch. Whats the deal.... sc heating up? if so, will the valve help out?

Message: I checked my with a straight edge also. Brought them to this guy who build IHRA and Busch series engines and he had to mill them. Any little warpage will hurt the head gaskets due to all the pressure your building in the cylinder. When I checked the heads they seemed true to me. Used a feeler gauge and found nothing. He found some warpage. Definitely where I blew the gasket out at. The whole surface wasn't milled. It's some good insurance to have. But if you like changing the head gaskets ( I know I don't ) I'd have them milled incase you start to notice the head gaskets going again. If you blow those 1008's I have a set to sell you.

Message: $180, yes alittle. But THe Solicor head gaskets are thick than the 1008's so My compression is about the same.
