Message: you don't need twin turbo just pick a singal turbo with enough cfm at a given boost and you will be ok. ruf (porshe tuner) takes twin turbo off and goes single. most modified supras also run one turbo. just get one large enough for your application.

Message: twin turbos would probably make for a better daily driver too. you could use 2 smaller turbos and they will spool faster, getting you into the boost sooner.

Message: yeah but eric, you're pushing less air and heat through each turbo, so they wouldn't really spool all that much quicker. the more air u push through a small turbo, the quicker u get boost (not all that much quicker than a big turbo), the bigger the turbo, the more the power u can get out of it. u have to find a balance though. u don't wanna set up your turbo for boost at 6000 rpm (big turbo) if you never run it that high! ;o) if u turbo freaks already haven't, get "maximum boost" by corky bell. it explains damn near everything you need to know.

Message: And to think I thought it was tight just making a SINGLE turbo fit under the hood! hehehe
I'm still sticking with my theory that a single turbo will be more than enough for a relatively low revving 5.9 engine (5500-6000 rpm). Besides the fact that a single can definately make way more boost than you can get the engine to live thru. As far as how quickly the turbo spools up? That's all a function of a proper set-up and choice of turbo parameters. Since mine spools almost instantly, I have to believe that the 5.9 would act the same way. I'll admit that having twin turbos would sure look better, and would sound more impressive in the signature list of mods - but I don't think that would be worth the extra cost and complexity.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it! hehehe

Have you seen the Diesel Dakota on Mopar Chat? It's under "Not your everyday conversion" and it's here in Atlanta.
I figure you boost it to about 40-50 psi and get bigger injectors and make a 500 hp/1000 lb-ft Dakota 6-cyl.
Heh.

Message: One small and one large turbo is the best isn't it? You have the small one that kicks in at low end end a the second that hit's higher up the RPM band.
Engine size is not at all an issue. Ricers even run twin turbo's and they ain't big!!

Message: I would say stay cheap!!! Two Hybrd T3/T4 turbos one on each manifold seems like the ticket. I am guessing thAt 6-10 psi is all that this engine can handle stock. That should give this thing a real kick in the pants.

Message: I don't know about you guys, but I do know about Turbo V6 Buicks...
They have a 3.8L V6 that stock, makes about 240 hp at the wheels. That same factory turbo can make up to about 350hp at the engine.
So, for a cheap way to put a turbo on a 3.9L DAK, why not choose a stock or slightly upgraded single turbo from the Buicks? They are Garrett T4/T3 hybrids from the factory, and can be easily and cheaply upgraded to put out as much as 450+hp.
After that, you have to move up to like a T60-1 Turbonetics turbo which is big$$$.
I like twin turbos also, but it is harder to get a good working combo on a small engine.
One Idea I had for the twin turbos for cheap would be this....
Run two of the small T3 turbos that came on Turbo II chrysler performance front wheel drive vehicles. These have nice looking housings on the compressor and turbine sides (no bolt on flanges--you can hook a K & N cone directly to the inlets) and have their wastegates integrated into the exhuast housing outlet which are 90 degree dumps... several different configurations of exhaust housings are made so that one or more could suit a certain setup better.
These Turbo II housings are more expensive than the early style Turbo I Garretts that have the draw-through setup on them and a bolt on flange. Otherwise, you can buy some of these draw-through type turbos and buy machined aluminum air filter adapters that bolt to the housing to allow the use of K & N's.. You can buy these turbos reman'ed for about $250 or less each and two of these would make enough boost and power to bust a 3.9L in half... They are capable of 25 psi (over-spinning them) but can easily and reliably maintain 20psi if they are well balanced.
With enough intercooler on it,these should make around 450Hp out of a 3.9L engine...
For cheap!!!!!!
Good luck guys!!!
Later,
Ryan
