Subject: no air filter at track IP: Logged
Message: I have a 9" kn home brew air intake
and i was wondering if when at the
track i could take off the air hat
just leaving the TB exposed. Will
this hurt my engine or will it
even give some hp? or a couple .1's

Message: I would not do that, your filter is there for a reason, although you might not always see what is being sucked in your engine, it's there for a reason. I bet you wouldn't get but a couple hp -- not enough to make a real difference for what you are doing. Keep the filter on there!

Message: It is hard to explain the physics, but the tube between the air hat and the filter will help the air charge into the throttlebody and create more power than just the naked TB. So leave the hat and tube in place and just take off the air filter. But only at the track.

Message: I wouldn't even take out the filter unless your racing for money and you need the extra hundreth of a second. You won't gain more than 1 or 2 HP at the most and you'll be killing your engine.

Message: Hmmm ... let me put it this way. No way in (&&*# would I run with-out an airfilter.
You MIGHT be able to grab a couple of extra horsies ... IF it doesn't gag your engine ... but in the long run, you are going to lose a heck of a lot more of the Get-up-and-go unless you enjoy rebuilding your engine on a monthly basis.
If you run without an air cleaner you will suck down dirt and particles. Not only can these clog your fuel injectors ... but you are also looking at the possibility of piston / ring / valve damage. Even just a few extra "nicks" and "Pits" in these items can cause you to lose HP and TQ.
So, in my most humble opinion, keep the Air Cleaner on

Message: If you're at the drags and are looking for some tenths than take it off. Why does everyone at the drags run without if it don't help. I'm not saying drive down the street without a filter. Try one run without it and i bet you'll see a difference. My friends ram was running 16.1's all night and he wanted to get in the 15's. We took the filter out and he ran a 15.8. I don't understand how a aif filter will help from injectors getting clogged.

Message: Ever see the air filters that Warren Johnson and the pro-stock boys run on their cars? None. Yeah, they;ve got huge budgets and can rebuild an engine whenever, but if they are willing to make it thru 8 rounds of competition on a motor that certainly costs about $50,000 with no filter, then I am willing to make a few Friday nite runs with no filter. After that I put it right back on.
But that scares some people. So, it really all depends on how fast you want to go.....

tossed as quickly as it entered. Cover your TB
with your GF pantyhose. Take your hood off
and show these scardy cats whos boss.
How would it plug your injectors? Thats like
saying your cok could get clogged by pissing
in a sandstorm!!!!LOL

Message: Sure, you can do it just fine. It seems that you are more leaning towards having it off anyway. I however will never be doing such a thing.
Although, it would be pretty funny if you were going down the track and a freak dirt-devil went on the track and you ran into it...

Message: i ran 3 years in my 78 mustang with open carb. then again, i knew the motor wasn't going to last very long. But with the intake i had, i couldn't fit ANY air filter on top without cutting a hole in the hood. But that was carbuerated, not injected. and wasn't my daily driver either. Like the other guy said, unless its for money, don't risk the damage. it may seem like a small risk at first, then you'll be likely to do it again, and again...each time counts and adds up quickly, causing more and more crap to get into your engine. At least use the gfs stockings, that'll work for a few passes without doing too much harm, but still harm nonetheless.
