The guy at the dealer by my house told me that if I put in a 180 degree T stat, that it would throw my computer off and it's not good for my truck. I have also herd you guys talking about putting one in to make more power. Which is true? Thanks guys

The Magnum engines make their best power at 180-185. No problems with the PCM on this at all.

Done it on my '99 and it only got better. Also I put a 160 in for a while. Ran good and gas mileage was O.K. but I almost frooze my butt off during the winter. Not enough heat to warm up the cab. Hehehe. Go for the 180. Won't hurt a thing.

It shouldn't be that hard on yours. Look at the big fat radiator hose that goes from the top of your radiator. Follow it to where it is attached to your engine. That is the t-stat housing. If you take off those two 10mm bolts (and whatever else around it is in your way) you will find the t-stat. CAUTION: Partially drain your radiator first or you'll have coolant all over the place (like on your serpentine belt...coolant will dramatically shorten the life of your belt). When you put the new t-stat in, make sure it's right side up and that you've cleaned the gasket surfaces thoroughly. Use a new gasket and some RTV. The t-stat a lot of people are using is a Robertshaw 755-180.

Depends on how nimble your fingers are. Some people do take things off or at least loosen everything. On mine, you have to loosen stuff to get at it. On the 4.7 engines, the t-stat is mounted off to the side and under. It's a PITA for them.

I got mine off by patiently moving it back and forth between the alternator and intake. I did not remove the neck on top of the thermostat and I removed the hose from the radiator to make it easier to turn around.

I used a Stant Heavy Duty 180 degree p/n 59358.

Drain the radiator first, drain pitcock on the bottom left (drivers side) of the radiator.

Others have tried Stant as well both reg and hvy duty. Some were okay. Others ended up sticking open or closed. That sucks...means you have to go back in and change it again. Robertshaw 755-180's are also more accurate. I believe they open at ~183º. I think the Robertshaw's and the hvy duty Stants are about the same price.

They all use the same one, even the 4.7's. Try Autozone or Pepboys or Walmart or any other chain auto parts store.

Are you saying that all the V8 dakotas use the same stat? If so, why wouldn't they have the same part listed for the 4.7?

I use the Robertshaw in the 4.7 engine. Bought from www.speedtweaks.net

In Florida or anywhere with 90 to 100+ degrees it is a good thing to change to the 180. The stock 195 degree was in there to help meet emissions.

At a car show sat in my truck with the A/C on for almost an hour and the needle on the guage was sitting 1/4 inch above the red mark on the cold side. It has never gotten any higher.

Hey Nick I live in Dallas and I have the 160 t-stat and when it gets hot and humid here and sitting in traffic it heats up fast but once I get going it stays cool. It doesn't get cold here in the winter like other places so U should be fine. Yours would run good w/ the 180 but I have heads and cam work done on mine so I gotta keep mine as cool as I can.

The only problem i can se is that you would defintely have to change the oil every 3K, because the oil won't get hot enough to burn off all the crap in it, especially if you do a lot of short trip driving.
