Subject: Largest Tire Size for Stock Setup IP: Logged
Message: Hey, does anyone know the largest tire size i can put on a stock 2001 4x4? I read someplace that 32 x 11.5 (12.5 would be cool) or some size like that will fit with out problem. I was just wondering if you guys new for sure. I want to go larger, but i dont really want to use a body lift, and a lift kit is just to far out of my budget right now. Thanks :)

Message: I put 255/60/17 on mine, you can use the DML wheel calculator to find the exact measurement for those they fit perfectly

Message: Oh, i forgot to mention, it came stock with 265/70 R16. The whole tire conversion is a little confusing to me. I use DMLs calculator, but i dont quite understand how it mathimatically works. Anyways, i guess with my package, i have the 16x8 rims. I cant afford new rims yet, how do i find how big of a tire (width) will fit on it? Arg, im just a newbie at this. :(

Message: You've got the same truck as me and from what I can see, the front wheel wells don't have room for much more than those 265/70R16's without a lift. (Assuming you want NO rub at ALL). Of course there are no lifts out yet for the 2000-2001's. I think what we have for tires are about equal to 31's at most. I can't wait for something to come out fo our models.

Message: Yeah, i just want a small 3" lift. Damn me for buying a brand new pickup.
Oh yeah, i noticed Bernd has a 2" body lift on his. What does the body lift gain (besides 2" :P)? His truck looks really good. I guess i just never looked into what good a body lift was. I always thought suspension was the only way to go.
oh yeah, how much wider can i go? i take it not much but it'd be nice to be 1" or so wider, give me that beefy look. the 265/70 R16 = 30.61x10.43
using DML calculater, i came up with 290/65 R16 = 30.84x11.42 I think that would be a good size, but i'd probably never find those. and i'd probably still rub. Oh well... i'll just keep dreaming of the new K&N, Flometrics TB, JBA headers and anything else that has yet to come out for my baby. :)

Message: Yeah, it's always what you didn't ask that gets you in the end. My hopes are hangin on Rancho. TC said a definite NO on any lifts, but Rancho said they had one in development/testing. You think that the money they could make from us new Dak buyers would motivate them a little more to get something to market. It's understandable of course if it is just plain difficult from an engineer's standpoint but sheesh! Get a move-on guys. Guess it goes back to the ol' saying: "Assumption is the mother of all f***-ups."

Message: You will be able to handle anything that equals 31X10.50 without a problem, that is what my truck came with stock. You could go to a 32X11.50 without any problems either....ask the place to test fit a set for you just to see if they rub or not. Hope that helps a little....

Message: I've got 32x11.50x15's on my 2000 quad cab 4x4. no lift no problem. As for 16 in. rims, you could probably go with 265x75x16's. Same width as your stock ones just a little taller. I'm not sure if 285x75x16's will fit or not. I know they will fit on your rims just not sure abut the clearance. As was said by others, have your tire shop test fit one on the front, set the truck down and turn the wheel all the way in both directions to see if it rubs. Make sure there is enough room for suspension travel too.

Message: Oh, i havent purchased the tires yet. The goal (because of my budget) was to get a taller and wider tire for my stock rims. I read in the Offroad forum that some people had 32x11.5s on the stocks with no lift and no rubbing. After i save up a little more cash, im going to run to a local shop and test fit them, make sure i dont get any rub. I'll keep you guys posted. Damn i love this forum. And Bernd, you are my Dakota god. :) Oooohhhh, my gibson cat back system will be here on friday!! i cant wait to get some sound under my truck. :)
PS, does anyone have any good recomendations for tire brand/model? Like i said, im new at this, i come from a ricer world. One thing is for sure, i like my dak more than my ricer! HAHAHAHA!

Message: I was interested in getting 32X11.5R15's for my truck as well. Would I have to change my gears in the axle as well? Additionally, how bad would this affect my spedometer, and is there something that can be done to correct the error?

Message: I've been running 265/75/16's on my 2003 QC, no lift. There has been no problem with any rubbing. These tires are about 2 1/2 inches taller than the 245/70/16's that came on my rig and now it's looking more like a 4x4. I don't think the 285's will not fit. There's a 7.78% difference in the diameter (with the two size jump). Therefore after the change a reading of 51 on your speedometer would really be 55. A one tire size increase equates to roughly 2 mph, or if you go with a bigger tire 53 mph on your gauge will mean you're doing 55.
I'm lovin the look of the 265/75/16's and it's a very common tire size (Chevy puts this tire on much of their stock equip.) That means the price is lower and you can find them in a small town.
Also, I think they'll fill the wheel wells once I get my lift.

Message: I went in garage and measured how much clearance I had left and I have 3" side to side on fender and 4" from top of tire to fender, My truck seems high for a 2 wheel? If I have that much left 32" should fit on 4X4 easy.

Message: The 285/75/16 will rub at the front of the fender. Don't think you can crank the torsion bar up enough to clear. As posted earlier, the 265/75/16 fit good.
