Subject: no oil pressure?????

I have a 97 dak with the 318 3.90 gear in it. My question is... I run 4.5 quarts of oil and a half a quart of stp oil treatment. Every time i rev it up my oil gauge barley moves above 40. Sometimes when it's warm it doesn't even move, like when it's registering 5 grand on the tach it just sits there at 40. Is that the oil pump or the oil pressure sensor???? I got this bad rattle too, and wondering if anybody thinks that the two may be related??? The rattle is 2500 through the rest of the tach. Is this because i have a bad oil pump? It's a thin metal rattle sound it's very pronounce, and sounds extremly awful!!!!! I know that it's not valve pinging or my cat but what ever it is it isn't pretty!!! thanx for any help!!!

i got a 97 318 dakota 5spd, and my oil pressure drops after speed shifting but then goes up, ever since i started runnin 6 quarts of mobil oil, the problem seemed to go away, but then came back, finally i noticed that it was my paxton super charger that wasnt gettin the pressure b/c of a faulty valve, so i changed that and turned down the psi from 30 to 22 and the problem went away.

You may have to pull your pan and check it out under there. I have seen some cars pump strainer screen get clogged. Some cars have oil pressure regulators in em, but I am not sure about the Daks. A noise over 2500 rpm and oil pressure problems doesn't sound good.

Could be lifter clatter above 2500RPM, which could be associated with low oil pressure. I'd get the oil pump checked and such. You might want to take it to a mechanic, or the dodge dealer for that.

The clatter worries me. There is so much it could be. Rod slap, lifter noise, worn bearings, junk in the engine... nothing (possible!).

Dude, not to scare you, but in my 1995 5.2 the lifters started rattling a little, then my oil pressure never moved off of 40 lbs(at idle or high revs). 2 weeks ago, my oil pump locked up. End of story...Except for the new engine going in. Check it out closely, it's costing me 3 grand.
