Subject: 4.7L NEW GEN OR 5.9L IP: Logged
Message: I'm new to this board.
And would like to ask you a question. I appoligize in advance if this question has already come up.
I'm buying a Dakota this week, and would like to know, What would be the best engine to choose from for aftermarket upgrades?.....4.7L OR 5.9L
Is the 5.9L more popular to upgrade in after market parts. I would like to get this option, but it's the extra cost that gets me.
Is the 4.7L just as popular? when it comes to aftermarket parts??
pls help
will be buying a Dakota Quad Cab slt 4 x 4
pls help???

If you're looking for mileage, the 4.7L has the advantage over the 5.9L. On the aftermarket parts, there are some pretty good parts out there for the 4.7's, but not even as close to as many as with the 5.9L. (The 5.9L - 360CID - has been around for a LONG time.)

Message: the 5.9 has been around a long time, and
thousands of aftermarket performance parts
are avialable for it.
I decided to go with newer technology over
displacement. I liked what they did to the 4.7,
a 287 CI engine producing almost as much
HP as the 360 CI motor is pretty impressive.
Although the 4.7 has less torque than the 5.9,
it is a much lighter and efficient design, I liked
the aluminum heads, and the OHC design.
So far, companies have made a lot for the 4.7
motor, intakes, headers, Throttle bodies, and
CW even installed 4.7 HO cams.
the 5.9 is supposed to be replaced soon by
the newly designed 5.7 motor, and I believe
the 3.9 will be replaced by the already Jeep
production of the 3.7
The 4.7 is steadily getting more popular, but
the Die hard R/T fans love their 5.9's....I just
wanna know if they will be die hard 5.7 fans
once the 5.9 is gone????They dog the 4.7
motor a lot, but the little engine has a lot of
potential.

Message: Drive both!
I drove a 4.7 QC and a 5.9 QC -- was NOT impressed with the 4.7. Power IMO is fair in a QC, whereas w/5.9 is very adequate. If you are going to tow I recommend the 5.9. Mileage isn't that different between the two. I have gotten a high of 19 doing 65 and 18.5 doing 70+

Drive both vehicles. Everyones taste and needs are different.. Form an opinion for yourself. If the cost of the 5.9 seems to pose a problem for you, and the little bit of extra torque doesn't seem to matter to you, there are plenty HP mods out there for a 4.7, that are reasonably cheap. You could maintain the payment that fits the budget... And that my friend makes the wallet happy.
Good Luck on your purchase.
No matter what size engine you end up with, you've got a rock-solid reliable piece of transportation.

Message: I drove both engines and they are both guzzlers... yes, I know I live my life from stop light to stop light, but hey... I did it in both trucks and it was the same gas mileage. The 4.7 is no doubt very impressive for it's size and design... but I would rather spend a few bucks and upgrade the 5.9.

Message: If upgrading is the primary importance then people pointing you to the 4.7 are really misleading you. Yes there is suff out and more coming out all the time but this is doubly true for the 5.9 and the 5.9 stuff is less expensive to boot. The 4.7 is tweaked better from the factory so I think it really responds to the mods less then the same mods on the 5.9. If you think Mopar and the aftermarket is just going to let the 5.9 die then why are they still making a big aftermarket for the big block, hemi, and non magnum small blocks when all of these haven't seen a production car in 10-30 years? I really don't think the 5.9 guys dog the 4.7 guys at all, it has always seemed to be the other way around to tell you the truth. I'm not dogging the 4.7 here it is a great motor, and for most people it would be the best choice. Come on though 4.7 guys, can you honestly tell this guy when, as he stated ability to mod the motor is of primary importance, that the 4.7 is still the way to go?

Message: Once again the past 4 posts fail to answer the initial question, you all sound like a bunch of politicians putting your own spin on it. He didn't ask which transmission was better, or which felt faster around town, he asked which motor is better for mods! Do you all honestly think the 4.7 motor is a better motor to mod? Maybe in 5 years the aftermarket will be close to what it is for the 5.9 now but that's a long to to hang on, the whole time better starting points like the 5.7 hemi will be coming down. The 5.2 and 5.9 in their current form have been around in mass quanities since 1992, and some of the very best stuff (r/t heads, M1 intake, stroker crank) have just reciently come out.

What's the best engine for mods?
........ A friggin' Chevy!
If you want to spend money on mods than the 5.9 is the only logical choice. You will be able to buy mods until you run out of money.
He's getting a big heavy 4x4 quad cab that will probably never see the track..... go with the 5.9!
