Subject: Swapping Rear End Out IP: Logged
Message: ?
Hey Guys,
I was thinking about my rear end today and decided that I don't like it :) I've got a '01 CC 4.7 auto with open wheel in the back. I was wondering what the possibilities of getting a used 3.92 rear axle (or something) off another Dak or justed used somewhere.
What are y'alls opinions?
I'll be looking in the houston area.
Thanks

Message: It would be much easier and more cost effect just to swap out gears than changing axles.
Now if you upgrading from 3.55 you might need some kind of computer flash for the 3.92's to get a correct speedo reading. Unless it gets this speed from the tranny or rear axle. I not sure about that part.

I really need help!

Message: I may have the answer for you. I recently swapped my 8-1/4 3:90 sure grip for a 8-3/4 in my '92 Dakota. If someone out there knows the widths of the '01 verses the width of the '92 (and it will work), I'll sell you mine. I'll take $600 dollars for it, but the rearend is a Masterson's Auto Parts and Salvage. If your interested give David Masterson a call (1-800-405-0369) or go on his web-site www.mastersonautoparts.com and tell him you're interested in the Dakota rearend that Chet took out of his Dakota. He'll know what your talking about.
Actually, the rearend is out of a '96, and it had roughly 4,000 miles on it when I bought it. Then I only put 2,500 miles on it when I had it in my truck. If it will work and you want it give 'em a call. He'll ship it anywhere for you.

Message: I believe that the 4.7l Daks have the 9.25 Rearend like the R/T's. I've actually looked into swapping my 3.55 for 3.92's or 4.10's. The gears themselves aren't all that expensive. But I'm not too comfortable swapping them myself.

Message: y2kgibbly- If you have a '01 4.7,,,you either have 3.55's OR 3.92's in the back. Most likely you have 3.55's/open. Same as me....sux...you have to be sure whoever you're trying to impress is on the passenger side of the truck!
I'm not the expert,,but you can step up to 3.92's pretty cheap (something like$350 what you said earlier),,however THAT doesn't make it LSD. There is another mechanism/part that affords you the limited slip/posi. That's where it's gets mo' expensive.
I was also wondering about yanking the axel off a wrecked (front end damage) truck w/LSD,,,I wasn't sure what the cost would be on it though.

What you're saying about getting one off a wrecked dak is my second choice. I'll probably order a Mopar LSD and get it all put together.
I'd love to hear if anyone has any other ideas or tips on what I need to get.
Thanks.

I used a '70 8-3/4 Chrysler rear-end that I had narrowed and installed it with a Chassis Engineering 4-link kit. All together I spent $700 to $800 for the housing, the Pos-unit (Auburn Pro), Richmond Gears, and the narrowing/resplining the axles.

All of that was just 800 bucks? Where are you
from? Also where did you get the housing, posi;
etc. from. Did you have to shorten your
driveshaft? How difficult was this swap. I need
to do this, I have a 360 that is going to break my
8-1/4 on slicks.

Message: I don't have much experience with LSD 3.92 on my R/T. Even my Dana 60 on my old Powerwagon? Which is better lower or Higher 40/60?
I do know that I had a borg Warner Aussy style 3.27 in my GTA that broke. I upgraded to 3.73 and it cost me $700.00, but it was worth every penny :) Already had the LSD. I had a junk yard Camaro open rear end for the time being and that was a nightmare! How could anyone even think of accelerating without breaking the tires loose! Maybe good for a 4 banger.

It may have been a little more, but not much more that $800.
Now bear in mind I got the housing for about $70 bucks from a junkyard. Then I got it cut and resplined for around $300. I got the "guts" of the rearend from Jeg's. All of the installation and set-up of the posi-unit/gears was done by me and my buddy, as well as the 4-link to hang the housing.
On my '92 Dakota it didn't have to shorten the drive shaft. All I had to do was take it to a Machine shop and have them cross-reference a u-joint to fit my driveshaft and the yoke of the rearend. For now it works perfectly, but once I build the motor for the Dakota, I'll probably have the same shop build me a driveshaft to hold the "power."

Message: Chris,
According to the FSM, the Dakota is available with either 8.25 or 9.25 inch rear end. 8.25 has 10 bolts on the cover, 9.25 has 12. It appears that if the truck has rear anti-lock brakes, it has the 9.25 rear end.

BTW all a-body 8 3/4's have an oddball 5 on 4 bolt circle. i had moser engineering send me a set of axles with the 5 on 4.5.
