Subject: K&N drop-in installation IP: Logged
Message: The award for 'stupidest queston of the day' goes to this post, but I gots ta know!
How is the K&N drop-in filter supposed to be 'dropped in'? I mean, do the pleats face up or down, or is there only one way to install it. I have a '02 Dak with the 4.7L, and the instructions I got with the filter I received yesterday (via UPS), aren't that clear. I admit I haven't looked at the airbox yet (didn't get off work until late last night) so there may be only one way to install it, but I thought you guys would know. I didn't want to install it to find out later that I had it upside down and had to reverse it.

Message: Just spoke with K&N. That's what they said Dave, pleats down. Just wanted to make sure before I screwed something up. Thanks for the reply.

Message: My brother has a dropin on his 5.2 - he says it isn't worth a damn. Thats why I went ahead and bought new intake (Airaid, which everyone says sucks, but was the only one I could find guaranteed to fit a 2.5 - yes I have a 2.5) myself.

Message: The drop-in K&N is worth having if you don't
intend to take the bigger step up to a custom
intake system (AirRaid, FIPK, etc.).
You will never have to buy another air filter
element again - just clean & reoil the K&N
periodically and it will outlast your vehicle.
They do breathe easier than the paper filters,
but you must maintain them for best
performance.
BTW, I have a drop-in filter for sale - I did take
the ($$$) plunge for an FIPK.

Message: Don't forget to install the gasket. There's a double-sided tape/gasket that's included with the filter.

Message: I just put one in a '02 with a 4.7. There was no two way tape that came in the package with mine. There is only 1 way to put it in .... there are 3 wide tabs on the side towards the motor and they must go in the 3 matching slots.
Cheers ... Audie, from Ontario

Message: My new drop-in installation for a 2002 4.7 DID have a stick on gasket - the instructions said it was VERY important to the success ofthe filter. The instructions showed which wy it goes but I can't remember.

Message: I am using the stock airbox with a K&N Drop-in filter, but have also modified the intake for improved airflow.
I have used a fernco elbow, short PVC pipe, and a fenco
coupler to connect to the airbox. I then extended the air
intake to the grill using 4" aluminum ducting.
A modified black plastic sewer pipe connector
is inside of the airbox to connect the aluminum
ducting, and a sewer pipe 4"round to 3"x4" rectangular
was used to get the air from the grille.
I had to cut some slits in the 3x4 pipe to fit around
the a/c lines.

Message: BB2DAK how much of a gain would you sayyou got from your set up? I did almost the same thing before going open element and I did't feel that big of a difference between the two. but I didn't remove the elbow off the front of the box.

Message: If you didn't get a gasket with your filter then you need to call k&n asap. The gasket seals the lid to the filter because the k&n isn't as thick on top. Without the gasket the filter will move up and down letting dust in and thats not a good thing at all.

Message: BB2DAK,
Could you e-mail me please, We have identical trucks and options, cept mine is two tone white over silver. I want to know about the driving lights. I also have a similar intake.
My K&N drop in didn't come with a gasket either, fits really tight though.

Message: I noticed a change from the butt-dyno, but have no way to quantify that.
There is now a definite low-pitch rumble/growl noise under acceleration.
Another reason for doing this was that the stock airhat seems to get very hot after driving.
It almost acts as a heat sink, which actually heats the incoming air going into the engine.
I added the duct to the grille, and the aluminum heat shield in an attempt to fashion an inexpensive 'cold-air' intake for my truck.
