Message: Coming home last night my driveshaft broke in half. Does not look like it twisted in half but broke in half right in the middle. Has anyone heard of this problem before? I kicked it down to pass a truck in the highway and after I got around him, BOOM, it broke. Is it made of aluminium? It's extremly light.
Probably not dyno on Saturday now. I don't know how long till a driveshaft comes in to the dealership. I'll dyno the truck with the ASE computer mod as soon as I can.

Hypotheticly, I about craped my pants.
Hypotheticly, I was testing out the ASE speed limiter removal and top speed.
Hypotheticly, I will never go over 112mph again.
I believe the drive shaft won't handle high speeds.
Just a word of warning. Hypotheticly of course.

Message: Hahaha thats why it broke. I was talkin to Kenne Bell last night cuz they said they forgot to remove my speed limiter but they will if I send it back but they don't recommend it cuz its not good on the driveshaft, tires, and some other stuff. Looks like thats why Chrylser puts on a limiter for that exact reason. ;)

Message: You guys need to keep something in mind in these discussions.
DC monitors all these different websites and watches for things just like this.
A friend of mine had his warranty claim denied and his warranty restricted due to modifications. None of the mods were on his truck when he took it to the dealer. When he tried to fight them on the claim, Chrysler produced prints of web pages that plainly listed his mods and included photos of his truck. I will never post pics of my truck or list any of the mods just because of that reason.

Message: So after this first post, we are positive that 116 MPH caused a drive shaft to break in the middle. BS. How come this is the first guys we heard of, with all the Leach and ASE flashing we hear about? Get the new shaft on and try again. Could be rotational fatigue, but that sh!t would happen under load as well. Complete BS. Maybe this guy just got a bad part. I just cannot see a shaft going with such a short time at 116 without a pre-existing defect. HEATH, I am a metallurgist for a major auto manufacturer. Send me photos of the shaft, and if you would like, I will give you my business addy to send the shaft to, and we will do failure analysis. DO NOT GIVE IT TO CHRYSLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They will toss the evidence.
Email me ASAP.

Message: Dodge won't let me have the old drive shaft. They have to turn it in for warranty work. I asked a few engineers here at a work and they don't see speed as the only factor as failing either. They think there was somekind of pre-exsisting defect. kawzx7 I hope your right.

Cool, I guess, just glad you are alive to tell about it. Just out of curiosity, what did the truck do when the shaft broke, just noise or more damage to the underside or what. So I know what to expect. :)

Message: If this is a problem that Chrysler should have
addressed before they introduced this power
train combination, and their use a speed
limiter is a way of disguising the problem, it
would be interesting to see if there are
remedies for those of us who have these
trucks.
Programing the computer to limit speed is
certainly cheaper than a new drive shaft.
It wouldn’t be the first time that a car
manufacturer miscalculated how much stress
a component should be able to handle.
I also wonder if the replacement drive shafts
Chrysler is supplying are the same as the
original or if they have been improved.

Message: Jim,
That is exactly what i was trying to say. That Chrysler impossed a Govener on are trucks as a way to limit there liability for producing an inferior product! Class Action!, I have the 2001 brochure that rants and raves about Magnum this and performance that and says nothing about a limiter that prevents you from using your truck in the ways that they are trying to market them.
I had no idea about the limiter untill I called Ken Belle about the performance flash after purchasing my Dodge and was informed that they do not remove the limiter because the driveshaft can not tolerate high speeds. What the hell? there is nothing new about driveshaft's in the last 100 years ( except materials ), it is still the same basic principal. And yet Dodge somehow decided that instead of making a quality product that can withstand the claims of there own marketing!. they went with a band-aid fix by programing the trucks computer with governing device and have prevented us from getting full use of are trucks.

Message: All very interesting, a nice thread.
I have the 5spd., wouldn't have anything else. Why does it have a spd limiter of 117, nearly 20mph more than the auto? Someone said the auto is offset? Why wouldn't the manual be offset also? Curious.

Message: I've got the 117 limiter as well. Mine is a '00 5spd with the two piece driveshaft. Is the two piece something to worry about? I think it's pretty stupid to even have a two piece drive shaft. It seems like it would be like attaching to ropes via a knot rather than a splice. Seems like this would make it weaker.

I've got an 00 4.7L auto and my truck shifts into 4th at 115.. then i hit the speed limiter and fall off speed. this is all really interesting information and i'm kinda curious to see if we can find anything out about the weak shaft being employed. what company out there manufactures light weight drive shafts?

My 00 cc is auto too and my limiter is set at 117.
Just hit it for the first time 2 wks ago-pretty freaky ride when it kicks in.
I can only imagine a driveshaft failure at that speed-thought about a driveshaft loop once before-thinking about it again now.
Heath, what did happen when it let go?

If you want a fast car, buy a Porsche or something. Leave the trucks to heavy hauling.
Hopefully these guys have replaced their tires with some that are rated at these speeds?
Or will we hear their widows complaining about the quality of the tires and expressing amazement that a light truck tire would fail at 117 MPH on 20/20?
This is akin to using a screwdriver as a prybar then wondering why it broke...

Message: No way, I do not want to go a sustained 110+, but for short bursts it's a hoot! And on top of that, it's a principle thing. How many cars of thte 60's and 70's had NO speed governor, only redline limited. Did we kill off a lot of speeders then. I think not. Point taken, David W., but with the right equipment, these trucks are as safe as any car.
It the risk I have the desire and the RIGHT to take, minus of course the mumbo jumbo about speed limits, other drivers, heard it all, so let's not even get into it. Stupidity is as stupidity does, and I make every effort not to endanger anyone but myself. The 96 MPH limiter is already above legal speeds, so we should sue DCX, yak, yak yak.......

My tires are rated properly for the speed limiter-that was my original understanding as to why the limiters are set differently for our trucks-to match the ratings on the factory tires.
I do some heavy hauling and some heavy hauling a$$.
I don't watch 20/20. Bet my ex-wives do.
What's wrong with using a screwdriver as a prybar?
Think that's all.

I also have a 1965 SS Impala 327 with 3 duces, its no longer a race car, its a low low now but man i have hit some high speeds in that car and the driveshaft is metal so no worries there but this aluminum one is messing with my head now, I want to know more about it Heath.
