Subject: QC - 1/4 mile times/preparation IP: Logged
Message: I'm planning on going to the Houston Raceway Park this Friday and running my Dak "down the road". This will be my first time on a drag strip.
I've seen alot of posts regarding 1/4 times for R/TS, RCs and CCs.
What kind of times are the QCs running?
I think my truck is pretty fast on the street, but I'm wondering what kind of time my heavy truck will run? She WILL lay some pretty good rubber (expensive rubber at that. 16" Eagle 1s).
I just changed plugs (went back to Champions from 3923s), switched to Mobile 1, cleaned the FIPK and the TB. Any other suggestions for 1/4 run preparation??
I'm getting excited just thinking about it...

Message: I think I read somewhere that it was around the high 16's or 17's. Can't quite remember.
But as for suggestions on .25 mile-run preparation? Supercharger. ;)
Anyways....good luck and let us know what kind of numbers you turn in.
Thanks,
YJ

Message: Might wanna consider dropping the pressure in your rear tires... I notice that I bite more whenever I do that... This past weekend I had a real taste on how the weather can affect the way that you run. In the morning it was hot and muggy and I ran a 15.45 and a 15.44, then a lil later it started cooling off I ran a 15.23 and a 15.21.... then some type of front blew in later in the evening and I was running right close with my best times (all humidity in the air was almost gone) and I ran 15.02's (damn evasive 14 second mark). In my quad cab that was an automatic, with the 4.7 and no mods, I ran a 15.94... and couldnt break that time. It was a considerably cool day, and I connected really good on that run. Whenever you pull up into the lane, I maneuver myself to where I dont run my front tires through the water (what you get on your front tires will get on your rear, wet = slip = dont go no where fast) then you'll be pretty offset. Back up to the water, punch it a sec to get your tires nice n wet and pull forward a little out of the water. Hold the break down and stand on it. Let off as soon or as long as you like, and start to stage. At take off, I normally put the RPM's right at the point before the tires begin to spin (2200rpms) and hold it there until I think the last yellow light is about to go out (with that method I consistently cut .502-.529 lights). Floor it(you might have to let off and stomp it again if you hear your tires spinning, if you have limited slip this will help your situation a lot) and once you connect, stand on it all the way down to the signs... and make sure you stop and pick up your slips... first time I didnt know where to get it and I drove right past the hot blonde that had it... lol... anyway, just a few tips... good luck... and one more... no matter what... dont be embarrassed, and dont feel rushed if the other guy is up there and staged waiting for you.

Message: Oetkengc has some good ideas. I disagree on one part though, most people will say don't use the water for stock radials as you will end up with water still inbetween the treads, and dripping off the fenderwells. You arn't supposed to really burn stock rubber as it just melts and gets greasy not sticky, just enough to clean all the gunk off of and in between the tread. Also don't lower the pressure to very low as you will ruin the contact patch on stock radials. Most of these tricks are more for drag radials or slicks.
For my tips, get the truck cooled down some before you run, turn it on long enough to move it then shut it back off. Open the hood to let the heat out in between runs. Rev it up a few times when staging to make sure the clutch fan didn't engage from idling, mine seems to engage after a few minutes but reving it up to 3000 RPM usually releases it. You can consider dumping some extra weight like the spair, jack, and tailgate before you go. Try and run with about 1/4 tank of gas. Keep you windows up for best aerodynamics, and make sure the HVAC system is just off, as the A/C compressor will run in more modes then just A/C. Any electrical loads put more stress on the alternator so keep lights and stereo off too. Somebody there will probably have a mini weather station so get the outside temp and humidity form them as well as the altitude of the track. You can keep a log or convert the numbers to get "corrected" times. Good luck and just have some fun, if you screw a light up, you can still get good numbers form the run, as reaction times really don't mean anything on practice runs when you are trying to establish your dial in. Later in the bracket racing those reaction times are very important but not in "test and tune."

Message: i have not been to the track, but i did use a gtech, so im not sure if my time would be concidered valid to you, but according to it, my best time has been 16.01 at 87.?? mph. this is with a 4.7 liter with air intake and a 40 series flowmaster, a full tank of gas and warm weather and my wife was a passenger. i need to get to the track and see what it it does now with the 70mm tb and 4.10 gears, and only 1/8 tank of gas. hope this helped you at least a little.
