Message: I'm having real problems with detenation on my 2.5 - everything I've read says that they should run find on 87 octane fuel (stock of course). All I've really done to the engine so far is install an Airaid intake. Last time I changed my plugs, however, I did use a slightly hotter than stock Bosch plug. Going back to a cooler plug should help, but does anyone have any other suggestions (besides running higher octane) to help stop this infernal pinging?

Message: how old is your truck and how many miles? first i would replace the spark plugs like you mentioned (why did you buy hotter plugs) but instead of getting stock, go one heat range cooler. You can also put in a 180 degree thermostat if you don't already have on.

Message: Put the stock intake back on and see if the problem goes away. The aftermarket intake may be leaning it out.

Message: The hotter plugs happened because no one in this little one horse redneck town had the right plugs. Looks like its time to look harder huh?

Message: ah, i didn't see that. More then likely, the plugs could cause that problem more so then the air mod.

Message: (i'm a dodge tech with a 2.5 dak)i also had a spark knock problem, but after switching to 89 octane, the problem went away.the air intake is definitely not the problem, however the plugs could be.as for the air intake leaning out the fuel,it's impossible, because the oxygen sensors and the pcm wont allow it.the pcm adjusts injector pulse width to compensate for this.

Message: Iceman!! Where have you been hanging out? a Dodge tech eh? So let me ask you this - what do you think of the tip on SpeedTweaks to run autolite 3923's rather than stock plugs? Are there any mundane issues (cold starting, etc) that might come up with cooler plugs?

Message: As for the autolite plugs,i personally think they suck.i have a set in my 2.5 now and i hate them.as for colder plugs, the only reason i see to use them is maybe for a vehicle with forced induction or nitrous.i think i'll try a platinum type plug next.we'll see what happens.

Message: I have a 98 Dakota 2.5L with a little over 60,000 miles. I changed Spitfires two years ago and they worked great the first three months, after that my truck went back to normal. My truck was getting about 340-350 miles per fillup(12 gals) Now my truck gets 300 to 320 miles per fillup. This weekend I'm gonna do some tune ups. I'm going to to change the rotor, distributor cap, put in Bosch platnium 4+ plugs, Accels 8.5mm spiral core wires, and a MSD Blaster2 coil. Hope the works out.
