Subject: Newbie--BASIC engine questions IP: Logged
Message: OK, I am seventeen years old and would love to know everything about engines. I am currently taking an engine class at school and trying to learn as much as I can. Right now I am rebuilding a 5.0L Chevy and I love it. I want to start doing some stuff to my '93 3.9L 4x4 but just looking under the hood, it is very different than the old carbed motor I'm working on.
I have a pretty good understanding of engines and most of the components, but I still have a couple specific questions.
What are all the sensors and wires going into the sides of the intake manifold. I always figured it had something to do with the fuel injection.
Also, I thought I had an understanding of throttle body injection, but is there still a fuel rail? I always thought this was only for direct port injection.
I've heard that my engine has a roller cam and roller lifters. How does this differ from the Chevy motor that I am currently working on?
I know this may seem elementary, but I figure I'd ask the questions on here, to those who know specifically about these engines, than to just get a general answer from my teacher at school. Plus, the way I figure, if I know more about the engine itself, I could understand how to pull more power from it safely.
I know this is a bit long, so thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any info.

Message: Fuel doesn't enter the engine through the throttle body, but the intake manifold -- so yes there is a fuel rail -- and that answers I think two of the questions, but I dunno about the cam and lifters.
I reccomend you get a manual for your truck if you're going to be doing this kind of stuff; it will prove most invaluable to you.

Message: Well, I've got the Hanes basic repair manual, but it doesn't tell that kind of stuff. It just has repairs for common problems.

Message: Is there a manual that has a detailed engine layout with a description of the components? If there is one for my year and engine please let me know.

Message: Your motor has Hydrualic rooler cam and lifters. You chavy motor your working on has just hydraulic lifters. You have those lifters but with a roller on the end of it. And the Hydraulic cam and hydraulic roller cam has a different profile. The roller cam has broader lobes too keep the valve open longer. Go to howstuffworks.com. It tell you all about motors.
