345 lb of torque, 250 hp at 4400 rpm

(345 X 4400)/5252= 289 HP??

ok, what gives here people, am I just plain doing this wrong?

I don't think that the max torque is produced as high as 4400 rpms.

You would need to use the torque output at 4400.

Peak torque is at 3200 RPM and peak HP is at about 4400 RPM. This is way some of the chevy engines look so good with a high HP peak. Even though they don't make as much torque (which is the force that acts to accelerate) they make there peak torque at a high rpm, and it's just that, a peak, not a nice broad, flat curve like on the 5.9. 200 ft lbs of toruqe will accelerate a equal sized truck the same at 2000 RPM as it does at 4000 RPM but the motor making that toruqe at 4000 RPM is putting out twice the HP for equal acceleration. Where the benifit of having a high RPM motor comes in is the ability to hold the lower gears longer, thus multipling the torque through the gear ratio longer. It's sort of a trade off, but the motor with the most total area under the torque curve will be the winner with the right gears.
